    PC Not Closing Down Properly

My desktop PC running Windows 7 64 bit behaves erratically when I close it down using the Start Orb - shut down button. Sometimes it closes down fully - on other occasions the computer goes into a deep sleep, (the hard drive light continues to flash, the fans are running, the monitor screen goes off) but it will not respond to either the keyboard or the mouse, both of which are connected by USB cables. I then have to close down the computer by holding in the power button for about 10 seconds.

When I next require the computer it boots normally and seems oblivious to its shut-down problem.

I always ensure that no programs are running when I shut down the computer and cannot see any clues regarding what I was last doing before shut-down that might trigger a problem.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the USB device drivers to no avail.

    Any other suggetsions?

    Hi,

Are you by chance running any Norton products on your system as they have been known to cause random shutdown/sleep issues with Windows 7

No - I abandoned Norton years ago. My software is just
    IE8,
    Windows Security Essentials,
    Microsoft office 2010,
    iTunes,
    Photoshop Elements 7,
    CCleaner,
    Diskeeper 2010 (running in background)
    Google Earth
    Quick Time
OKI 5650 Colour Laser printer driver

PS: I installed Windows 7 PS1 yesterday but it has not made any difference.

I do not play any games and use the computer just for Email (gMail), internet browsing, office work, playing music, downloads to iPod and photo editing.

Well,, you can start by trying

    SFC \scannow

to check the file system is ok.

Next, you might want to find out what Manufacturer HardDrive you have and run HDD Diags
    As well as Memory Diags

Tried all that - problem remains.

Right-Click on the TaskBar and go to Properties than select "Start Menu" tab and see what is selected in the "Power button action"... by default it should be Shut Down. Seems like your is "Sleep".

    Hi,
To the best of my knowledge when a computer is running in safe mode, the USB connections don't work. So when you say they don't respond, I am curious if you mean once the computer is set to shut off, if the USB connections get terminated. Have you and can you try a regular keyboard connection (PS2), and see if that makes the difference...Just curious.
