I've been considering going SSD. I know about the limitations of the write cycles but I'm curious whether anyone has had problems of using SSD drives as read-only device? Such as using a SSD attached to a headunit in a vehicle? Seems it would be a perfect combination.
Anybody familiar with any problems using SSDs in such a manner (as a read-only)?
Well, this is all very interesting. Thank you guys and girls for participating in this discussion. I think the bottom line is that we need not treat the SSDs like raw eggs. They do not break as easily as some people suspect.
I bought my first Vertex1 over 2 years ago and since then it was running on 2 different systems without problems. I also have 2 first gen 80GB Intels since nearly 2 years that run perfectly well. One on this desktop that I use 10 hours per day and one on a laptop that the wife uses. Then more recently I installed two Vertex 2 on two other laptops and they seem to be running fine. But that was only in the last 3 months.
I think pparks gave a good view - by the time these SSDs start to fail, we have probably long moved on to newer devices.
@ Shawn: how did you fit two 50GB SSDs into a laptop. Is that a 17" HP which is the only one I have ever seen with 2 bays. Or did you trade the optical reader bay.
It's a older laptop, Gateway P-7805u FX, that has two 2.5" HDD drive bays. The SSD's fit just perfectly in them.
