Take off the heat sink on card and re-apply thermal paste and try it ,, BUT if dusting it off made it work correctly even for a short time my best guess is card is failing from heat issues.
Can a bad graphics card cause programs to crash?

It worked for a long time after the first crash without dusting it. The card wasn't really overheating when it happened last night, and also, even when I let the card cool down to idle temps after the crash, the graphics glitches/errors would persist until I restarted and only when I restarted.

This looks like Garbage display to me and if your Graphics is'nt in warranty than it's time to take the card out and Bake it in Oven at 180 degrees. I had repaired my 8600GT iChill 2.5 years ago and it worked. You can find plenty of tuts on youtube how to do it. But becarefull and do it at your own risk. Coz sometimes the capicitors fell off from the board. You also have to remove HeatSink, silver panel or whatever's possible to remove.
