    Hard Drive "Missing"

Recently I went to rewire my computer and all went fine and I fixed a few issues with shorts and stuff (which have nothing to do with this problem) but when I went to turn it all on, the computer booted but I noticed I didn't have ANY of my programs or ANY of my games.

There are 2 disks involved and they are spanned. They are also DYNAMIC DRIVES.

Disk 0 --- Contains "Music" (Which I can see and use), with games and programs (which are spanned).

"Missing" Disk (Yes it is plugged in, spinning and "working") ---- Contains Games and Programs which are spanned and split up.

There is no reason that this shouldn't be working. The hdds are fine in that I ran a WD diagnostic tool to check SMART and said it was alright. Then I ran "Stellar Phoenix Data Recovery" and I could see all my files. However, that program couldn't transfer it correctly or I wasn't using it right. It simply takes too long to do trial and error on it (many hours/scan).

I have come to the conclusion that it has to be associated somehow to the MBR. But when I boot to linux to check it in a GUID environment, the disks can't be accessed. This problem must be on the software side and it has to be something that can be fixed.

I've searched the internet to find any possible solution and many of them don't work or aren't applicable to my situation. ANY help would be awesome and I'd appreciate it much.

I run a business and I did make backups but it will take weeks to transfer the amount of data I had over. It would be better if I could exhaust all possible solutions for getting these to work again before I go reformatting or anything.

I will promptly respond to any questions, so please go ahead and ask.

    Thank you for your help!

EDIT: Here is a picture of computer management and what I see.

Since it doesn't have a drive letter I can't run a chkdsk on it. Or am I wrong? It just defaults to my windows drive whenever I tried to do it before.

Ok I have never seen this particular problem before. My very first thought was to suggest checking the SATA cables, but I didn't mention it as the one drive is partially visible. I do not know if a drive will partially work if a cable is not on properly, it might be worth checking.

It might also be an idea to try swapping cables from working drives to see what happens. (more to exclude things that are not at fault)

Is it possible to assign drive letters to the missing partitions?

That was the first thing I checked when I came across the problem. I swapped out ALL sata cables (for ones new out of box) and moved around the power (make sure no short, etc) and there wasn't an effect.

No I can't since the disk isn't activated.

Then I think we are looking at the backups

If the discs are corrupted then the chance of getting them working again with all data intact is IMHO pretty unlikely

    Sorry

What you said about the cords got me wondering and so I just checked them again and checked for damage and one of them looked like it was almost spliced. So I replaced it and another disk is showing up and it is listed as "Invalid".

I right click and the option is to "Reactivate" or "Convert to Basic Disk". I choose "reactivate" and it says "This operation is not allowed on the invalid disk pack".

Curious. How does this change things?

    Pic:

As you can see, the "missing" drive is still listed at the bottom but the "invalid disk 0" is now showing up. I'll try to initialize via cmd.

Edit: Tried bringing it online via diskpart but it says it is online. Tried "repair" but says it isn't available with this version of windows. I tried "recover" but it says "Virtual Disk Service error: this operation is not allowed on the invalid disk pack". Hm.... :|

Edit2: What about a quick format? The MFT would be overwritten but I resetup the array exactly how it was but now it has a new table and windows can interact with it. Theres a good chance there will be corruption but I can run a low level recovery program to find the files and write them to the MFT again. It is a long shot and a risk but with Pooch's suggestion it is worth a shot....right?

    Hi,

Just to check, this spanning isn't a hardware span (ie. RAID) setup in the BIOS is it?

Software span via computer management. This was before I was technologically savvy.

It changes it in so much as I have no clue what invalid means lol

As for the missing status I have found info here It is quite old but should hopefully still be relevant; Disk status descriptions: Storage Services; File and Storage Services

I will continue to search for the invalid status description as I found no mention of it on the technet site
