    Do SSD Drives become fragmented?


    The question says it all. I have noticed a large growth in the use of SSD drives instead of Hard Disk Drives due to the boost of speed and now wounder: Do SSD Drives become fragmented like Hard Disk Drives?

    No, an SSD will never become fragmented and will never need to be defragmented. This is because flash memory access is uniformally instant no matter where the page is from on the device.

Disk Defragmenter is reporting my 60GB SSD is 18% fragmented. I have never defragmented the SSD as the general consensus seems to be that it's unnecessary on SSDs and if anything, it shortens the life of them. Should I defragment it?

Never thought too much about it until reading some threads here. My Disk Defrag was set to once a week which I think is default. AFAICT my disks have always been 0% fragmented. I don't think it is defragging them to get them to 0, they are not fragmented to any degree, according to Windows. ...

Anyone know how to Defrag the system files? I realise they are in use. I tried closing out all running programs with Task Manager but, Norton & another program wont close. Can I Defrag at bootup to Defrag the System files? Anyone have this problem? Thanks!
