Windows 7: need to wake my computer

need to wake my computer

Hello all. :)

I have an issue that is a bit obscure, but I'm hoping some one can help.

I'll explain the issue first:

I have a dell dimension 8200. its from 2002, but as of last night it is in perfect working order. runs win7 awesome. never had any issues.

I swapped the guts of the dell and put it into a custom case that had more drive bays. this rig hold 8 hdds and is a major part of my environment. this was working normally for many years and still will work if..

I was putting in an new 1gb nic, and I noticed the comp would not boot when I removed the original pci-nic. (wake on lan was enabled at this point)

heres where I got screwed over.. I have been using an atx power supply, the type that has it's own switch on the ps? and I never used the original power switch from the dell case. was just to hard to remove at the time of this case migration, and I really didnt seem to need it when everything just worked with out it.

b/c of the wake on lan feature, when I hit the power switch on the power supply, it would blink once, then power on. I was just as surprised, so I let it work.

like a moran, I disabled wake on lan (wake on power options were disabled and still are) in effort to test the new nic I had put in. it was late and I was moving to quickly. I shut the machine down instead of rebooting and now I'm stuck.

so I'm in a situation where I cant 'wake' this comp, tho its more or less is working.

The mobo light is still green when I turn on the atx power supply. just need SOME kinda action to wake it. is there anything? other then doing something in the bios? b/c I cant get anything to fire up to make those changes. if I can boot it SOMEHOW, I can re-enable all my wake on power/lan options and be back to everyday working.

I've got the dell power switch now that I had no other options. I've rigged it to the mobo, BUT, it seems when I hit the power switch on the atx ps, hoping to use the dell on/off switch to wake it, I get a strange scenrio where I do not get my normal atx blink once, then a green mobo light. it just sorta hangs and hums when I have the orginal dell on/off switch put in. I know the switch is being seen, b/c if I remove it, then I get my normal blink once, then wait to boot.

I've also tried a power supply from an optiplex that is about 4/5 months older then the dimension. I plug in all the cables, power it on. it seems to have normal green mobo light like it's waiting for me to hit the power btn. but when I do, nothing happens.

So I'm now wasting my whole weekend fixing a comp that wasnt/is not broken, just mis configured in a really bad way. and I'm looking for any options any one could throw my way to get this rolling. I need this machine up for the business week as I do have other computers, just non with open drive slots to play a bit of remove and replace to get at all these drives.

any ideas or questions would be much appreciated. I know this isnt a hardware specific forum per say, but I know there are a few smart ppl here that may have an odd-ball idea that would work for this.

Whats the difference between a PS that has a switch, and does not? How would this effect me?

Why would it NOT boot if I have a similar PS from the same year and using the orig on/off switch?

How can I wake/boot a computer, that does not have any on/off switch, but also all the wake options disabled and un able to get into bios?
