When I get try to create a new partion it tells me this

Whenever I try to create a new harddisk partion so I can dual-boot linux and 7 it always says when I click new simple volume on the unallocated space it always says this operation will convert the selected basic disks to dynamic disks and if you convert to dynamic you will not be able to boot any os's
What does this mean and how do I fix it?

Have you tried partitioning it in a Linux live cd? (I'd recommend Puppy for this). It's a lot easier than the windows one, but remember, if you're changing around the partition sizes, make sure that you will have uninterrupted power to the machine, as some operations (such as moving right) can take some time.

I'm guessing that you currently have 4 primary partitions on the hard drive and you are attempting to add another. You are limited to 4 primaries or basic disks on one hard drive.

To add a 5th partition you will need to turn one of those primaries into an extended partition and then you can create up to 128 logical drives on that extended partition.

Can you post a screen shot of your Disk Management window?

yeah, those all look like primary partitions. as TVeblen said, try and turn any of those partitions that you use for data (for example, just storing media, not an OS) into an extended partition and then creating a new partition should work

See this tutorial here: Partition / Extended : Logical Drives
    Use Method Two.

Not exactly easy, but will do the trick without heartache.

An alternate method would be to delete one of the 3 primary partitions you will (eventually) not need.

The second partition ( C: ) contains Windows 7, so that is out of consideration.

The First partition - System Reserved - contains the files that allow the computer to boot. That system setup can be changed and the partition could then be deleted, but you need to know all of the ramifications when doing so. Consider this a last resort for now.

The 3rd partition is you HP restore partition. This is the feature of your laptop that will allow you to restore the entire system back to the exact condition it was in when you took it out of the box.
You can burn a set of Recovery DVD's from the tools in the HP recovery folder. Once you have a set of recovery DVDs these will do the same thing as the recovery partition, which now being redundant, could be deleted.

The 4th partition is HP Tools. I have not worked on a laptop with HP Tools yet, so I don't know exactly what these are or how you use them.
My impression is that they are diagnostic and repair tools that can be run from the BIOS or boot screen - something like that.
You could look into whether you can burn a set of HP Tools DVDs from your system, or if you could copy the contents of the partition to an external source temporarily in order to copy it back to a logical drive you will create later. If you can do these things you could then delete that partition.

Once you have deleted one of the 4 Primary Partitions then you could shrink the C: partition and create and Extended Partition from the Unallocated Space and within that create up to 128 logical "Drives".

You should read up on the previous tutorial and study the specifics on the HP partitions and then pick a direction and plan. We can help further, if needed, once you have decided which way to go.
