    DVD Drive not Detected

I used the drive to install Windows recently, but the drive does not show up in Windows. In the BIOS is does show. The drive is a ND-3551A with an IDE connection. I have tried slave mode and cable connect, but none of the settings works. Is my drive not compatible with Windows 7 or what might be the problem?

In Disk Management my DVD drive reads "Disk 0, Unknown, Not Initialized". When trying to initialize the drive I get the message "The quest could not be performed because of in I/O device error" no matter if I choose MBR or GPT. Setting the jumper to Cable Select or Slave doesn't change anything.

To test whether Disk 0 is really my DVD drive I have tested with different CDs and DVDs in it. The size of the drive changes according to the size of the CD or DVD - so Disk 0 is my DVD drive.

Do you have any ideas how I can make the drive visible? Thanks.

Thanks for your effort, but it doesn't seem to work.

My drive appears as an SCSI Disk Drive and there is no advanced option to choose from so transfer mode cannot be set.

Installing the NEC ND-3551A firmware gives me an error: "Target NEC-3551A is not found correctly"

    Do you have other suggestions?

    Fix 1 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/982116

Fix 2 - download and install the latest AHCI driver - check to see if its enabled in device manager firstly - if not update the chipset drivers if they are a later version - http://support.asus.com/Download.asp...D+EVO&p=1&s=24

Try installing the firmware in compatibilty mode (If needed) with xp firstly then vista if it doesnt work - this works believe it or not - only try this if Fix 1 or 2 works as it probably wont find the drive.

To install a driver/program/firmware in compatibility mode - right click the setup.exe file - click properties - click compatibility - check run in compatibility with xp/vista etc - check run as administrator - leave the rest blank. Start setup.exe and install.

Thanks for your reply. Microsoft's Fix It did not work, and the "Let me fix it myself" didn't work either because there was no upper filter in the reg.

I am using the latest AHCI driver. Installing the other driver in compatibility mode did not work.

Thank you very much for your effort anyway. IŽll buy a drive with a SATA connection instead, I hope that will work.

    Hello Granave, try this

Click start, type dev select device manager from the list. click on IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers to expand it select the ATA Channel for your drive and remove the tick from the box Enable DMA
Click OK and restart the PC
If this does not work it might be possible to select PIO mode for that device in the BIOS
If these changes do not help remember to change them back again

    Hi Pooch
Disabling DMA made my computer veery slow, but it didn't make the drive visible and I couldn't initialize it in Disk Management. After enabling DMA the computer was back to normal.

I can change the PIO settings for 6 SATA drives in the BIOS (only 2 installed). The DVD drive only shows in the boot menu under boot device priority.

    Thanks for your try.

Last resort ensure the device is plugged into the first cable connector (there are two connectors on the cable) or try using a different cable.
You could also try this: SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

Here is a tip that has worked in the past.

Uninstall the optical drives in Device Manager.
Power down the computer to OFF. Disconnect the optical drives power & data cables.
Power ON the computer for a full cycle, check to see that NO optical drives are shown in Device Manager. Power down the computer to OFF. Re-connect the power & data cables to the optical drives. Power ON the computer, making sure it is connected to the Internet so win7 Updates can check for the most current drivers. Then let's see if they work.

    Fixed

Thank you, after trying all other options the last tip worked. Uninstall in device manager, shut down, pull plugs, reboot, check device manager that no optical drives are listed. Reboot then shut down again and replug device. Reboot. Drive back in explorer. Again thank you.
