Whether set to 1 or 4, it doesn't have an effect on the machine's performance once in Windows. This is only telling the machine what to boot with. If you're obsessive about boot times, then I guess setting to 4 helps.

Right click on Computer, select properties. Click Device Manager and expand Processors. However many cores you have will be listed here. If there's an accurate listing of your cores then Windows sees and uses them.. no matter what setting in the boot config.

If the machine is slow, then it must be due to some other tweak you applied. Is this a fresh install?

thank you for your response i have another quick question randomly when im browsing the internet or on a game my CPU usage randomly jumps to 100% then goes back down and when im playing a game the cpu usage jumping to 100% causes my games to lag for a short time but this short time makes the games i play almost unplayable i have tried turning the settings to the lowest they can be on the game but it has no effect it just keeps jumping to 100% so if you could please help me with this i would greatly appreciate it.

also a response to what you said no this is not a fresh install i have had this computer for about a year the model is a dell studio xps 16

Games are supposed to run the cpu at 100%... same with your graphics card. If you play a game and the cpu and gpu aren't at 100%, that's where you notice problems... problems that are the result of a poorly coded game. The only thing you can do about that is wait for the developer to release a patch.

Without knowing what machine we're dealing with, trouble shooting is going to be difficult. Could you fill in your system specs, in as much detail as you can? Thanks. :)

Also, what game are we talking about?

the game im talking about "i put games because it varies between a few games" is dragon saga
it might be the game because its not very well known and not alot of people play it but i randomly have FPS drops on it and my graphics card is pretty good.. heres some of my specs

    4.00 GB RAM
    Intel(R) Core(TM) I5 CPU M430 @ 2.27GHz

The specs i provided might not be in the right order... but im not that good with computers
    Thanks for the responses!

    Hi Warmage007,

Can you jump through a few hoops for me? Thanks, it'll help.

Right click on Computer, select Properties. Click Device Manager, then expand display adapter. What graphics card do you have? Right click on the video card to highlight it, select properties. Click the driver tab and tell me what driver version you're running? Close out of the device manager when you're done.

Click the Windows logo and type, without quotes, "msconfig", then hit enter. Allow it through UAC and click the startup tab. List here everything that has a checkmark.

Has your fps always spiked, or is this recent? What other changes have you made to the machine? Was there any particular tweak guide you read? Something led you to try and enable more cores at boot.. do you still have the link to that page?

As for my graphics card, i have an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4670
and the driver... wow its a year old o.o i have never updated the driver
but the version of the driver is 8.692.1.0
and the things i have checked for startup are
    Synpactics Pointing Device Driver
    IDT PC Audio
Dell Wireless WLAN Card Wireless Network Tray Applet
    QuickSet
    Microsoft Security Client

And the lagspikes are recent and the changes i made to Boot.ini were because i also play minecraft and someone told me that it does not play well with multicore systems so i set my processor to 1
i did not read a particular tweak guide. again Thanks for the response!

Update your graphics drivers, then update your DirectX: Latest DX9c Download details: DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer

Latest redist: Download details: DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010)

Do them both. Let's see where we stand after that.

btw... 1920x1080 is asking a lot of this video card.
