    DDR2 RAM question

My Mainboard officially supports up to 8GB of RAM(2GBx4)

Will a 4GB module(4GBx1) such as this ever work in that motherbaord although not officially supported
    I've heard that some x48 chipsets could accept 16GB of DDR2 RAM(4GBx4)

Probably not, since the module is 4GB and the only ones listed as compatible go upto 2GB. That said, the QVL list only details the memory modules and sizes that have been tested with the board. It is by no means exhaustive, and other modules/sizes may or may not work.

Even the modules I use(3X2GB Kingston+ 1X2GB unbranded) are not listed as supported but these work fine. What could happen if I insert a 4GB module, could the BIOS not detect it?

I don't know. You could try it (at your own risk, of course).

Thank you for your responses, I might buy another board since DDR2 is kind of obsolete

Anyone has any experience with 16GB on x48 chipsets?

I'm guessing one of three things will happen. The PC won't see it and won't post, it will show up as only 2 gig, or it will show up as 4 gig. As mentioned, the QVL is just a list of modules that tested OK. The two sticks of DDR3 I have in this rig weren't on the QVL list for my board but work just fine. YMMV.
