I don't know if this will help but I just bought a new DELL XPS computer with WIN7x64. My 4 year old Canon printer was being used on my old computer with XPsp2 on it. I attached the printer to the new computer and started the computer. The computer accepted the printer as new hardware. I went to the Canon web site and found a Win7x64 add on driver which I downloaded. The printer works fine. :)

Heyyou, it is a good point and probably should be very clear - it's not that my old HP7310 didn't work with Win7. It did. The generic driver worked fine. Also, the Vista 64 file that I downloaded from HP worked. This situation has been all about me trying to install the HP Solutions Center software that offers some additional tools for controlling the printer. When I couldn't get the latest HP software to install I started this thread to try and find a solution as to why.

I just don't want to leave the impression that this was Win7 hardware incompatibility issue with my HP 7310. The generic OS drivers were fine. It's the HP software that seems to be the issue. But, again, the printer works so I'm going to be happy with that victory and stop obsessing about not having the Solution Center. I could have bought a new printer with the time I spent trying to solve this.

Roni51, Sorry I miss read you. Now that I understand, I wondered if there is a remote possibility that the software file did indeed install, but not where it should have and therefore doesn't access. I know that is a reach, but maybe if you do a search, you can eliminate that possibility.

Heyyou - No, it's a different kind of installation problem. The installation starts normally, but as soon as the program tries to install updates before starting the actual installation, the program loops back to the first window. I've heard of these HP programs partially installing and then freezing. But, I've never heard of anyone having my particular problem. I've tried a dozen times now, even with all TSR programs stopped. Same exact thing happens. I could install the Vista 64 HP file, but not the Win7 64. I'm stumped. As I said, I'll keep poking around, but for now I'll use the printer as it is.
