System tries to access empty DVD drive

My systems keep trying to access the empty drive when opening or closing some programs or plugging in my printer or other devices. It is an HP dv6 laptop with Windows 7. Anyone one have ideas or can direct me to a known fix?

Have you any programs that use the dvd player other then windows media player - less likely ones to cause the problem would be real player & VLC (video lan) .
Have you tried to get a firmware upgrade for the DVD Player?
Go to : HP Support & Drivers | United States click drivers and software and type in your laptop models name. This will take you to the driver page and choose W7 64 bit (if available - vista if not) and you will have a list of all the drivers then select dvd/cd player if available for a firmware upgrade.

    No luck on firmware

No firmware listed for the dvd player. But did get a couple of other driver updates. Problem still continues.

Have you AHCI enabled - if it has a intel chipset sometimes installing the Intel Matrix storage Manager can fix problems with a dvd/cd players but for this problem i don't know - if its listed on the site and not installed it could do no harm to try it.

Has it only just recently occured if, so do a system restore back around it, this would put you in the drivers seat so to speak for troubleshooting the problem if it reoccurs.

You could go into device manager and uninstall the driver for the dvd/cd player, reboot and let windows find the driver for it hence reinstalling the driver - might fix the problem.

Go back to the site and choose a earlier OS's (eg xp or vista) you might find a firmware driver for it - and if it wont install normally, install the firmware in compatibilty mode for the OS concerned:
To install a driver/program/firmware in compatibility mode - right click the setup.exe file - click properties - click compatibility - check run in compatibility with vista,xp etc - check run as administrator - leave the rest blank. Start setup.exe and install.

u can stop windows auto searching DVD drives in general and at boot, so it wont spin to look for a DVD after/during welcome screen.
