As you are able to see by my System Specs I currently have a Phenom X4 925 (Deneb) in my wks. My Mobo manufacturer released a BIOS update according to which I should be able to upgrade the CPU to X61100T (Thuban). Ref.

I realise the new HAL should be able to handle it, but nothing wrong in checking it out.
You will need to do a fresh install. I upgraded all parts myself the other day. But just install over the previous installation and then run Microsoft fix it to recover files from Windows.Old
If Windows updates itself and all 6 cores are seen and available after the swap, no need for a new install of Windows.

nah, on most occasions a reinstall will not be needed. be sure to uninstall all the old GPU drivers and sound drivers as well as IDE Drivers and you should be all set to go. on older hardware you might need a reinstall.. hal versions are only for multiple and single core as well as x86 and x64 cpus. anything above one core is considered multiple cores and whether there are 2 or 56 cores, the Hal versions is the same.
even though I wouldn't recommend doing that, it is possible. doing a fresh install feels soo... fresh anyways!
Well, I am pretty sure that W7 will survive, if it comes to cores alone, but you forget the differencies in CPU architecture. I have been around since Palomino/Duron/Thunderbird and Athlon so I have lots of experience with this (anyone remember SuperSeven Asus KT133 mainboards, well i had many of them covered...CONRAM : ASUSA7V : INDEX , site is a bit broken).
Again, its not so much the cores, but the architecture, that may mess up your Windows. IMO.

If it's simply a CPU upgrade, Windows will most likely survive and detect the new CPU at the first boot and then you'll probably need to do a reboot and it will be fine from there. If you're also upgrading the motherboard, it's a toss up.
Windows will run on anything x86 as long as the windows version is x86. changing cpus is not a problem as long as you have the proper OS architecture type that supports it as well as the corresponding supporting CPU. Whether it is a 400mhz Celeron X86 or a Core i7, Windows X86 doesn't care. (minus the motherboard differences.. that would be crazy lol)
Windows 7 X86 = Pretty much any x86 AND x64 CPU
Windows 7 X64 = Any x64 CPU only
IA x86 and x64 are different.. but we aren't referring to or using any of those.
