Too bad we weren't much help!
No not really. If you remove that icon then you remove the ability to Safely Remove any and all pieces of hardware that may be listed in there.
It is just a glitch in the OS and or the way AHCI is implemented, not being able to distinguish between internal and external hardware.
I got an idea! Why not set the task bar to Auto Hide. That way it's not staring you in the face all the time.
Grant me the serenity to accept the think I can not change.
Have a look at this one, it works the same.
How to Reset and Clean the Notification Icons List in Vista
The icon is telling you that you have the capability to hot plug the internal SATA drive. Clicking on this icon will give you the option to safely remove hardware before doing it.
Are you sure you removed the tick in the box before trying to change what is displayed? (and leave it removed after changing)

I found the solution.
Depends on your harddrives / port number, etc
reg.exe add "HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\msahci\Controller0\Channel5" /f /v TreatAsInternalPort /t REG_DWORD /d 0x00000001"
reg.exe add "HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\msahci\Controller0\Channel1" /f /v TreatAsInternalPort /t REG_DWORD /d 0x00000001"
Just replace 0 ( number ) from Controller and 1 ( one ) from Channel with whatever you have to.
Check your harddrives / ports
I addes those value with command promt "run as administrator"
So, the numbers 5 ( Channel5 ) and 1 ( Channel1 ) are the SATA ports from my motherboard, and there i have connected my harddrives. No hotswap icon more in sistray. I tested with some USB stick.
The USB stick icon appear in sistray.
