you can try downloading a equilizer program

or check your audio input there might be a way to clear it up and adjust the sound for the enviorment that you are in

short of that the speakers could be bad as well does it sound distorted and static?

No sound isnt distorted,it s just low, have checked all the sound settings etc,the speaker grill runs across the width of the laptop and its seems only the sound plays from the left hand side of it,guys in the shop just said that the way the sound is on this model?

you'll be hard pushed to improve the sound/Replace the speakers.... Many of them are molded into the casing thease days and there realy isnt much variation in quality of sound threw many laptops.... unfortunately you'll just have to suck it up and live with it though you may be able to improve the sound threw the EQ in the sound options or buy a small set of speakers as an extra.... Logitech do some good quality laptop add-on speakers for a reasonable price.
    an example is
Logitech UK - Laptop Speaker Z305

There is nothing saying this LT have stereo sound though it does say Speakers but then thats just PC world jargon to get you to buy but do check to see if the audio is not default set to Mono
If your not happy with it, i would suggest taking it back and getting a refund.... it is your right to do so!
Forget the likes of PC world comet and curry's.... they don't know anything when it comes to PC's... the just know how to make people think they need it to get a sale.... go to an independent dealer and get them to run you through the pros and cons of what they stock.... forget the household name you've been lead to belie are good like Packard bell Advent ect these are mass produced cheap for PC world and affiliated companies
Do some research and look for makes such as MSI, Acer, Asus.... there are many more, in fact here is a link to Best & Worst Laptop Brands 2011
Though Good Id advise staying away from Sony and Dell simply because when they break they are very expensive to be repaired
