Hopalong, I am at a total loss. The only distinction I can make as far as writing zeros is, The parted magic issues a command and the drive does it to itself rather than externally doing it. Otherwise there would be no difference in option 1 and option 4 in the photo shown of hd erase. So, there must be a difference.
The only reason I asked about bios password is on the intel forums it was said that by setting a bios password is how you enable the drive encryption.
My only other suggestion is to simply run the clean command in diskpart. Theclean cmd is simply a low level format. Then align and format an aligned partition and install windows. Trim should take care of most everything else. At this point, that is what I think I would do. Your drive is new and has very little on it. I just would not run 'clean all'
