I've only got 1 PC with an SSD and while I really, really, like it....I just don't see the need to put them into the rest of my boxes.
I just find that my boxes at home and at work with the spinners aren't all that bad at all. I mean there is a difference...but it's not like one is usable and the other one is not. It's probably an extra 10 seconds on boot up and an extra second or two per application launch.
But hey, if I could afford SSD's for all of my machines...I'm sure that I would go that route as well. And you are right, an SSD can really breath new life into an old box.
I really noticed the difference in an early 2007 HP laptop with a 5400 RPM spinner. Once I put the SSD in, it was not only a lot peppier but also a lot cooler. That bugger was so hot before - you could fry eggs on it.
But my SSD route was rough. The first Vertex I ordered over 2 years ago and had to send it back to Newegg (millions of orphaned records all the time). They sent a new one which I had to send to OCZ to get fixed. At the time, one of my friends said: "SSDs are not ready for prime time".
But now things are easy. Not only are they a lot cheaper and there is a bigger selection, but they are also a lot more stable. And there are many convenient tools for migration, etc.
Updating firmware has caused the drive to slow down considerably however it's not noticeable outside benchmarks (write speeds are way down). At least I'm not getting the stuttering and/or BSODs some are reporting with the new firmware. Crucial needs to fix this ASAP! WEI has gone down to 7.7. The drive is still wicked fast but it should perform better than this.
