What Causes Bad Sectors on a Hard Drive? | eHow.com

You can try to fix hard drive errors by running Check Disk.

    Disk Check

You can also check the health of a hard drive by running SeaTools.

    | Seagate

If too many sectors are bad your hard drive may need to be replaced because data could become corrupted.

I tried Disk Check twice but still the recovery program detected bad sectors on my drive. also, I used the Seagate Seatools program. I attached the Seatools result in a txt file. with this post. There was no LONG DRIVE SELF TEST option available.

    Hi,

What sort of chkdsk did you try?

If you haven't already, try the following chkdsk /r

This will take some time - do not interrput the chkdsk process, let it finish.

    Regards,
    Golden

I had a look at your Seatools log. The drive has failed the Short DST and the Long Generic, both of which can be caused by bad sectors. When Short DST fails, Seagate advises running the long test from Seatools for DOS bootable CD. It should be available for download from the seagate website. If that too fails then you need to start thinking about warranties.

As a precaution, please backup all important data right now.
