ok then thats the one ill get and hope we can go from there
ok i went to bestbuy and got a seagate free agent goflex 500gb portable hard drive. i hope it will work cause i dont feel like putting anymore money into this fix. when you get back to checking ill be ready!! :)
Excellent! And money spent on a backup drive is never lost money, but rather money well-spent.
OK. Now now matter which approach you decide you want to use, we need to make a 100% system image backup of your failing drive.
But first, you need to make sure that the external drive is formatted as NTFS. Sometimes they come formatted as Fat32 or not formatted at all.
Can you connect the usb drive to your good system and then use Disk Management to format the drive as NTFS?
Do not use the external for any other purpose yet.
If you prefer, you can prepare the USB for use by using DISKPART.
I use DISKPART, but using Disk Management is simpler.
PREPARE A DISK OR A USB FLASH DRIVE FOR USE
Run CMD.EXE as an Administrator
Enter following commands, each followed by hitting ENTER:
· DiskPart
· List disk (lists disks in your system)
· Select disk <numeral> (without the < and the >)
· Detail disk (info should let you know if you selected correctly)
· Clean ALL (your entire disk is being overwritten with zeros.
This can take a considerable amount of time. Leave off the ALL for a much shorter clean which only cleans the boot sectors)
· CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY(create a primary partition)
· FORMAT FS=NTFS(format the partition)
· ACTIVE(the partition can contain operating system startup files)
· ASSIGN (the next available letter is assigned to disk)
or
ASSIGN Letter=X (Assign X as drive letter. Use the letter of your choice)
· EXIT (only type after Clean is finished. Exits from DiskPart)
· EXIT (this exits from the command shell)
ok so hit a little bump while doing this.
i got all the way down to create partition primary and it says that this operation cant be done on a disk that is being cleaned. does that mean that it didnt stay on long enough to finish the whole thing or what. i cant go on to the rest because there not valid i guess
heres what it say so far:
Seagate freeagent goflex usb device
disk id 000000000
type usb
bus 0
target 0
lun id 0
readonly no
boot disk no
pagefile disk no
hibernation file disk no
crashdump disk no
there are no volumes
DISKPART clean
diskpart succeeded in cleaning the disk
DISKPART create partition primary
virtural disk service error
the operation is not allowed on a disk that is in the process of being cleaned
the arguments you s[ecified for this command are not valid
ok so thats where i am with my errors when you read this i could use some input thanks
Codeword,
You've got me stumped. I'm tryiing to speculate as to where and how you erred from the straight and narrow path.
Let's start agian.
Important here is:
If you are using any antivirus other than MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials), then disable the antivirus.
If you are using any firewall other that the Windows Firewall, disable the firewall.
If you are using SpyBot or any of those other "wonder" programs, uninstlll them.
If you are using CloneCD, then uninstall same.
| msconfig | Boot tab | check mark Safe Boot | select the "minimal" radio button | APPLY button | OK button | Restart your computer.
AFter you computer has restarted and you have logged on as an administrator, | CMD.EXE |
Now run those diskpart commands, in the sequence which I gave.
If it still doesn't work, then go back and do the same thing again but this time do a CLEAN ALL (which will take a long time and you must wait, wait, wait for the clean all to finish)

alright so i did what you said and i got past the error im past formst fs=ntfs and got a 0 percent completed. does this part normally take a while if so ill reply with how everything goes after
yes, the full format, which I advocate when formatting a new drive, does take some time.
If mfgs had 100% quality control, then a quick format would suffice, however, 100% quality control is a thing of the past.
haha this is gonna take some time im only at 7 percent but it will be worth it to finally be able to use my other comp
