    Security Cameras

    Probably a dumb question, but after Googling some security cameras, I noticed that one of the camera photos showed all of the LEDs lit up like a Christmas tree. Is there such a thing as a camera with night vision that wouldn't visibly light up?

    Just as dumb an answer, put tape over LED'S.

    Many of the night vision camera control programs have an option to turn off the led's, as well as many regular cameras have that option.

    Correct me if i'm wrong, but I think those LEDs are the source of light providing the night vision. If that is true, taping or turning them off would defeat the purpose of the camera.

    Yes seekr some cameras use infrared LED's for night illumination. They shouldn't be very bright to the human eye though. There are aslo cams with a special CCD which "sees" infrared and has no LED's.

    When I Googled for cameras with CCD, everything that I found were cameras that also had LEDs. Those cameras also included the term IR in their description, so I would think that means that the ones with LEDs are only using a portion of the light spectrum for detection...I don't know. I guess that I will just have to keep looking.

    You can tape up or turn off those leds, and get external illuminators if your intentions is to not show your camera. Pad looking device with various number of led, some as much as 60 leds claiming 175ft. Your camera will not be noticed but the illuminator will be. Used to extend the distance that the camera "see's"

    I'm less concerned about a thief seeing the camera, as I am the apt. manager or other residents. They can be pretty quirky about things. If the thief saw it and it detered him from messing with things, then the camera would have done it's job better than if it took a picture of him, because from my experience, the local police are useless in theft cases.

    Those are IR LED's and do not light up at all.
    you might have been looking at a CC camera with an integraded LED flood lighting system that does light up, but normal night vision CC Cameras just use IR leds that do not light up.

    I don't know that it would work, but I got to thinking about another angle for accomplishing this;

    Night Vision Vehicle Car Wireless Security Camera 8 IR LED DVR Camcorder $59.40 Free Shipping @GoodLuckBuy.com

    If this was mounted from the far rear of the vehicle, it would not only be able to view anyone inside the vehicle, but perhaps someone outside attempting to crawl under the vehicle to steal the catalytic converter. However, it is unclear to me whether it would be able to send a signal that could be received by my PC router or not?
