i think my brand new VIDEO CARD is broken

    You might try uninstalling the display drivers and shut down, drain all power by unplugging the psu and pushing the start button, then remove the lower card. Start up again and reinstall the display drivers, power down again the same way then reinstall the lower card then boot up again. The new card should be detected, open up the Nvidia control panal, enable SLI and see if it works.

    If that doesn't work you might want to try one of the other Nvidia drivers, possibly the 185 series.

    I agree with your calculations and I never trust noname PSU's either, the power requirements of the second card may be whats causing this. But the specs on that PSU are more than enough from what I'm reading.

    I'm just seeing if we can get him going without having to spend more money LOL.

    According to what I'm reading the Couger psu is an 80plus bronze certified unit.
    http://www.outletpc.com/c1089.html which should be plenty for his system no matter which way you slice it.

    do you mean that i'm lacking around 120W to get to the minimum required power ? and around 170W more ? to getmy rig in full throttle ?
    i thought a 12v rail video card and sticking with my current PSU would resolve my problems ?

    here's what i've been rendering with my new rig..
    took about 2hours to render
    "draft quality"
    hoping that a good card would help me finish it a lot quicker..
    since draft quality still looks pretty much 3d..
    i prefer to render my work in best quality which is more photo realistic..

    OutletPC.com - HEC 1000 Watt Continous Power Supply - SALE PRICE: $209.89 which should be plenty for his system no matter which way you slice it.

    so does that mean my cards are the ones that have problems ?

    From where I'm standing those cards should both work and you have more than enough power for them. Thats an 80watt+ unit with 6-12 volt rails, 4 of them at 24amps each and two of them at 28 amps each.

    I think what Grim is trying to say is that since there are no 6 pin cables being used then all of the load is on the pci slots themselfs which may not have enough power.

    But I'm not sure which rails are for the pci slots, i'm assuming it's the ones with 28amps, if so, according to Grim's calculations it would still have enough power for your two cards because it came out to 27.5 amps. Those pci slots might even have 28amps each in which case you would have more than enough power.

    LOL, that looks so realistic, great work even without the elevators.

    Your PSU has 6 12v Rails with about 160W on each, one of those 12v rails would be powering the Motherboard and everything on it like the CPU Memory and your Video Cards.

    Because most Video cards have an external power supply separate to the one powering the Motherboard your PSU has been designed to utilize this and that's why they have gone for 6 12v Rails instead of a single high powered 12v Rail.

    Unfortunately your Video cards can't make use of the extra 12v Rails and are relying solely on the one powering the Motherboard and everything that is connected to it.

    If you have Video cards with the external power connectors that means they will draw there power from the other Rails and boosting your total available power to 480W.

    So like I keep saying, either get a good single Rail PSU or get Video cards that use an external power connection.

    i get it now..
    so in other words my vid cards are like.. too old for this new psu or something like that..
    and newer cards which have external power connectors are much more suited with my current PSU

    at least that's how i think i understand it...

    sorry for the redundancy... i was just being cautious so i wont waste my money on another incompatible videocard...

    All 1000 watt units with 6 rails say the same thing. That is only the potential of each rail. They all can't run at max draw at the same time.

    I'm not sure how many rails the board has access too but i'm sure the 28amp rails are for the board and the 24 amps ones are to power the GPU's. It looks like every other 1000 watt 80 plus bronze certified PSU on the market right now to me execpt for it costs less than most.
