Says no USB 2.0 ports but has Enhanced Controller

Another Compaq (presario sr2020nx) which gives the warning when plugging in USB that "This device can run faster if plugged into a USB 2.0 port" but then identifies no 2.0 ports."

Research on this in the past makes me think it is a false warning since the box has an Enhanced Host Controller which supposedly settles the issue that it is 2.0.

But two separate known-good wireless USB adapters won't function reliably so perhaps the ports are indeed only 1.0 causing this problem?

Any insight into what's going on here would be appreicated because otherwise this old Media Center box upgraded to 2gb is running Win7 well for a favorite nephew.

It might have selective USB 2.0 ports....the trouble is finding which ports are if it has any at all.

Yes Enhanced USB means USB 2.0. I suspect you've been here: Motherboard Specifications, A8M2N-LA (Naos) Compaq Presario Media Center SR2020NX Desktop PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English)= which verifies the mobo does indeed have two USB 2.0 ports on the rear plus two 2.0 headers internally, for four additional USB 2.0 ports.

If you did a fresh install of XP MCE you may have loaded an old driver. It's been awhile since I've used XP to any extent, but you could try uninstalling the Enhanced drivers and devices them see if Microsoft Update will get them for you. Alternatively a 4 port USB in an expansion slot might help you out.

EDIT: I just re-read and see you have Win 7 installed.

All ports get the warning message to plug into a 2.0 port, but the accompanying map shows no such ports.

Sorry Greg, did I grab the wrong link?

Does the motherboard have the model No. A8N2M-LA? Also USB 1.x should have a black inner connector while USB 2.0 is white and USB 3.0 blue. Unless the OEM has applied some "creative" colors, i.e., mine are orange.

The warning message comes up no matter which of the 4 USB (2 in front, 2 in back) is plugged into.

I just had a flash. I have an old Presario SR1750NX and the BIOS has a setting for legacy USB support or something to that effect.

Just checked, it has Auto, Enabled, Disable. Phoenix/Award BIOS.
