Windows 7: Asus p5gd2 deluxe mb and windows 7

05 Nov 2011   #11

Windows vista 32

I am sorry if I was not clear. I will give you the long version. I was running win xp with one hard drive on the primary ide and two dvd dirves on there own ide cables too the other ide slots the motherboard is a asus p5gd2 deluxe. I wanted to up grade to windows 7 so I ran the microsoft win 7 compatiablity software and everything checked out. I went to do a clean install of win 7, the disk would load untill it got to the install portion. At that point neither of the dvd drives would show up and windows 7 had no place to load from. I eventually was able to load win 7 by burning the install disk to a usb stick and loading it that way. Hopeing that after win 7 was loaded it would see the dvd drives. Not the case I tried everything but they will not show up eventhough win 7 was running fine and the hard drive showed up neither dvd drives would display. I searched the internet with no success and also called asus and was told that the mb did not support win 7 because it was too old. But I read of people running it online because they are having trouble with the built in sound card but nothing about dvd drives. Finally I got a copy of vista 32 bit and loaded that instead with no problems and was running it untill my hd died the other day. I also tried to go from vista to win 7 hoping because they are simular that win 7 would see the drives not the case. I thought I would reasearch this topic again since i have to replace the hard drive. I know I could buy a newer mb and solve my problems that way but at that point I might as well build a new computer. (This is a home build by the way) which is something I dont want to do right now. Especially after reading that people are running it on this mb. I hope that clears things up a little and i thank you for your help.

You are not doing bad with the info keep chugging.

The best I can do is suggest some settings to try to get the bios to find the optical disks.
Try the "Onboard IDE Operate Mode" [Compatiable Mode} It is probably now set to[ Enhanced].

If this doesn't work set it back to the original setting. You will have to make the change and reboot to see if it works.
"Configure Sata" as [Standard IDE] should be correct for the time being.
You could set the "IDE Detect Time Out" to [35] if it's not already there.
Check out the jumper settings on the Optical drives and see how they are set master? Slave? Cable Select? Don't make any changes without making a note of the original position so you can get back to where you began.
Possible combinations are "master" and a "slave". You have two header one is a primary so I would consider that the master. The other would be a slave.
They both could be set to "cable select" Which should work the way I read the manual.
I have never seen a board like this, so there is some guessing going on here.

All Suggestions

If anyone is reading this thread feel free to jump in. I'm about out of ideas except for the routine such as checking cables to see if they are tight etc.

Thank you for your help I was able to finally get windows 7 to see my dvd drives. I hooked the hard drive up serial ata and hooked the dvd drives up on the primary IDE. I put both of them on one cable with cable select on both units and it works great. Thanks again.
