It sounds as though the drive may have been corrupted or converted to RAW format.
Are you able to connect the drive to a different computer then use Recuva to get your data back?

Connect it via USB and see if it becomes visible again. If it shows up, then try recuva.
Yes but I would have expected that Windows would provide the user the prompt to initialize the disk when detecting a RAW drive???
