problems with my external hard disk

    hello guys ,
i have a 1 tb external HD and it used to work perfectly until 5 days ago . the HD takes forever to load and if i didn't wait for it to fully load and tried to enter one of the files it tells me that windows explorer is not responding and everything disappears for like 20 seconds ( i can only see my wallpaper). the HD fell down from me but it wasn't a hard fall and the problems didn't start right after the fall .
so guys can anyone help ?
and sorry for the terrible english.

You might want to run a diagnostic check on your external hard drive to see if that fall damaged it. You could check on the manufacturer's website for a diagnostic tool or you could run SeaTools from Seagate.

    SeaTools for Windows | Seagate

If any issues are discovered it may be time to save your data and replace the hard drive.

It should. From the user guide:

SeaTools for Windows is a comprehensive, easy-to-use diagnostic tools that helps you quickly determine the condition of the disc drive in your external hard drive, desktop or notebook computer. It includes several tests that will examine the physical media on your Seagate or Maxtor disc drive and any non-Seagate disc drive. SeaTools for Windows should run on both internal and external hard drives.
I also found this WD support article. See ID # 940 for a WD diagnostic test.

I'm not going to be able to give you an opinion as to which replacement hard drive is the best. That's kinda like asking which is better ... AVG or Avast. It's all personal preference. :) I've used Western Digital and Seagate at home, and at work they use Hitachi. I've experienced failures with all of them. But some of them have been working non-stop for about 3 years with zero problems.

Hard drive prices have doubled and in some cases tripled due to flooding in Thailand. My only suggestion is to look for the best price coupled with a good manufacturer's warranty. Some companies offer only a 1 year warranty while others offer a three year warranty. You could also check out the price difference between a store bought external hard drive (similar to what you have) and a build it yourself using an internal hard drive and an external enclosure.
