KVM Switch Problem

If I boot while a monitor is not connected .. All display settings are lost ..
and a reboot with the monitor(s) attached is required.

Anyone know a way to turn this W7 "feature" off ??

This is not a W7 feature as it can happen in Vista as well.
With Aten KVM's if the switch is not set to the monitor it does not know what size it is and will set it to a basic resolution (1024x768).
What make and model KVM?

I haven't messed in Vista long enough to find that out.
I have a couple of cheap KVMs but I don't think this is KVM dependent.
My XP systems stay where I set them .. Independent of the monitor connected .. or not.

I'm also wondering if this will be a problem with my laptop .. and a projector ..
should I move it to W7.
Sometimes .. I connect Projectors or Monitors manually.
Looks like W7 has to know whats out there when booted.

This config has served me well .. Until I installed W7 in the second computer.

I am fairly sure there is no work around you have to connect the monitor before switching to that port in KVM

Oh No .. Another annoyance in W7 ??? ... I was afraid of that.
I'm getting tired of trying to find workarounds.
Seems like this new luxury car can only turn right with 3 left turns.

Many Thanks.

It's a command issue found with KVM switches do not support full-time DDC /EDID communication between connected Monitor and connected Win 7 systems. Place a DDC/EDID emulator between Windows 7 system and your KVM switch should do the job. Windows 7 OS checks display EDID information all the time (I think because Wind 7 supports multi-touch/ touch screen devices ).

If you having so many Win 7 systems connected to your KVM switch, you may want to replace KVM switches which support All-time/Full-time DDC/EDID (built-in All-time DDC/EDID emulator).

noyb,

XP did not issue the HPD (Hot Plug Detection) for when monitor is turn-off or switched away, but Win 7 did.
With Win 7, the HPD will be issued not only for monitor remove/off, but other devices such as audio/speaker, USB keyboard and mouse..... There is no way to turn off this HPD function so far as I understand at this time.

I'll say Win 7 is too smart. And sometimes, we don't need to be very smart but a simple life.

put a DDC EDID emulator between Win7 system (your second computer) and the KVM switch.
it should work.

I'll remember that if I'm ever forced to use W7 and a KVM.
Right now .. I can not use my new Graphics card and dual monitors ..
and have XP and W7 in the same computer.
