    Shot in the dark...

Go to the Device Manager and find the entry for your DVD. Right click it and select properties then "Region" and make sure a region is set for the drive. Without a region set it won't play movie DVDs.

Nothing that I can think of other than possibly replacing the drive.

Can it read like a game or data DVD?

If it cant read those either then it's probably a defective unit., DVDs are 10x as challenging to focus and read than CDs. So you may be able to read CDs find but not DVDs for example.

But if it reads data DVDs fine but not movie DVDs... then that's stranger. I don't know what might cause that except for the region code setting...

Was this problem there from the beginning or came up just now? That is, were you able to play DVD movies before? Can it read a commercially mastered Data DVD? Can it play a home-burnt DVD movie?

I guess that a weak laser may be the cause of this strange problem. Try running a lense cleaner CD several times and check whether there is any joy.

On your machine, try if an external DVD rom drive will play the DVD movies. If it does we can more or less fix it on a faulty failing hardware that may require a replacement..

That is a good bit of information. After your computer was infected by a virus, you are unable to play DVD Movies. It is then definitely not a hardware problem.

That should give a lead to other system experts here to suggest possible fixes.

My solution will be a drastic reinstall after backing up all data.. Did you get any Recovery Disks or Reinstall Disk with the System? If there is a Recovery partition in your system did you make the recovery disks? If there is no recovery partition HP should have given you an install disk. Ask for it.

    Hmmm...

See if its a software problem by downloading YUMI (YUMI - Multiboot USB Creator (Windows) | USB Pen Drive Linux) and installing Ubuntu on a usb drive. Boot from it and put the DvD into the drive and see wat happens then. if it dosent work then consider replaceing either the disc or the drive. also test the disc in another drive if you have because maybe the disc is damage. if it works then it is software problem
