Is this a laptop Denis? If not, a new DVD burner is cheap, at least in US, about$20-$30 dollars, slim laptop ones would be more.
Whne my drive went bad it had no problems reading, but did make burning a hit-or-miss thing.

Optical drives made today should be considered disposable devices. They make them to be cheap, not durable. Optical drive failures are quite common.
No its not a laptop its a personal computer. Its only 2 year old but willl probably have to buy a new one. I just want to make sure that its real its fould. Thats ii isnt the dvd's or althog unlikely sofware problem.
I got my first PC in 1999 and had 3 and never an problem with optical drives. But will look at some prices today. First ill ask my neighbour if he has an empy dvd that i could try. Thank you.
Absolutely. Do all the tests you can but set a time limit. Borrowing a different optical drive to try is a great idea.
Yes, just an early model at the time.
Is your optical drive mounted vertically? If so make sure one you get can be loaded that way, most new ones can be. Should be a normal size one but make sure of the connection. There are still some IDE out there and newer ones are SATA connected, have a look inside.
