HP model number for the desktop. We can find exactly what you have at HP.
Sometimes HP has extra Tools for diagnosis also.

I forgot about that when my parents HP optical drive didn't work out of the box in 2003.
HP has the best website for finding hardware info on their own products.

HP Support & Drivers | United States

Auto detect model #. click the Start Now button.

Just under this. "Or automatically find your products and solutions"

This may prompt you to a troubleshooter if so give it a try.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If that does not work go to this page. http://www.hp.com/

Bottom left corner is a very small world map. Click it and select country for HP/EU countries. Then you can find the Support and Download page for HP/EU or narrow it down to find your model # and the troubleshooters for HP/EU

    HP Slovenia.

Podpora in gonilniki HP | Slovenija

I don't see a Auto Detect button on this page so you will need to figure that out. Their will be a page telling you where to find your model number on the case.

This page shows you how to find the model # on US HP. Guide to finding your product number - HP Customer Care (United States - English)
    Narrow down selection under Desktop.

They should be in similar places as Slovenian models.

    h20180.www2.hp.com/apps/Nav?h_pagetype=s-001&h_lang=sl&h_cc=si&h_product=82702&h_client=S-A-R135-1&h_page=hpcom&lang=sl&cc=si - Translator

Slovenian page translated to English. My Slovenian is a bit non existent.
Select your type of Desktop and follow to find "How to Find Model number".
It will be on case and originally was listed somewhere in the HP software.
Then also there may be a trouble shooter to run on the optical device. It may help.

    Mike

I'll be checking on you or if you need help with HP web site ask.

Well it just uses a regular CD/DVD player.

As Britton pointed out the only thing is to make sure if it is a SATA or IDE data cable.
That way you get the right one if and when you need to replace it.
