Quick question for you..
I was going to buy some extra ram for my father in law, but then I thought perhaps I could upgrade mine and give him my G.Skill Ripjaws.
The question is regarding voltage.
He has an older i7 rig 1156 socket where the default memory voltage is 1.65v iirc.
Is it safe to run my 1.5v Ripjaws in his system? And if yes then should it be set to run at 1.5v on his system or should it be overvolted?

It would help to know the exact model ripjaw we are talking about here.
crazy string of numbers on the chip usually to the effect of F3-14900CL9Q-16GBXL
..as an example.
That is some odd ram xmp ready claims it's for a z68 p67 chipset board, yet caps at 1.5.
Odds are it will run at 1.65 without problem since it's performance ram to begin with, but you were right from the start it's definitely 1.5 ram.

Maybe I should have worded the question more generally.
Lets say something like -
Can you use newer sandybridge 1.5v memory with older i7 set ups such as 1156 and 1366 types where the default memory voltage is 1.65.
I am guessing some people on here have?
like I said it should be within voltage tolerance, and I have seen it work before.
I just don't put it under recommended.
Would probably be best to just try one stick with memtest running and see.
