    How Much Ram For Editing Video?


    Ok so here is my system specs:

    Intel Core I5 Quad Core @ 3.30ghz
    64Bit Windows 7 Home.
    ATI Radion HD 6450 1gb dedicated.
    Ram 6GB DDR3. ( x2gb stick, and x1, 4gb stick)

    so i know i need more ram for video editing but what should i upgrade to 8gb and add another 2gb in or max out to 16gb.

    p.s i know a ssd hard drive would be good but can;t afford at the moment.

    also if i posted in wrong section of forum mods, please move it to the correct.

    any thoughts??

    I can use Sony Vegas and After Effects at the same time on just 2GB of ram, if your PC has 4 RAM slots, just stick in the 1 4GB and the 2 1GB sticks. 6GB will be more than enough.

    yes i know and figured that but would 16gb be overkill? for editing 720p HD gameplays for youtube?

    4GB is enough, 8GB is better but if you're planning to spend money on 16GB... there's better ways to spend your money. 8GB will be more than enough!

    crikey - that is sub-optimal to say the least, you must get a lot of swap-file thrashing with that. windows itself has to take up a good chunk of that 2 gig, then you've got two big software packages - plus all the video data!

    i would say the more ram the better! it is pretty cheap these days after all.

    I've been researching this for a PC someone wants for video editing. High end video editing programs are one of the few pieces of software that can truly take advantage of multiple core processors and multi channel RAM. The more RAM the better. It's all about speed. So fill it up!

    It's simple to me. The price of Ram is reasonable. Max you computer out if you got the money. What Ram you don't use or need today can be use later when you do need it. The last batch of Ram I bought at the wrong time and paid top dollar because I didn't buy it at the right time. Time is right now IMHO.

    Go with Max RAM


    Have 16 GB RAM & with Adobe Production Premium CS5.5 can run Photoshop, After Effects, Premier Pro with no ill effects. Have deleted the "swap file" with no problem. This build has run flawlessly since constructed in August 2011. I am very pleased with the encoding speed. I say go with the max RAM since it is reasonably priced.
