LiteOn iHAS224 24x DVD±RW DL RAM & Lightscribe SATA Optical Drive - RE

Hi.. I'm running Win7 Home Premium (64-bit) with Intel i7 chip, 8Mb RAM, onboard graphics. My Liteon DVD-writer is only a few months old and performs all its functions without fuss - except one. When I load a DVD-RW or DVD-R containing only 'jpg' images, it takes an age to read them. It won't allow access till that reading is done, regardless of whether I've chosen 'List' or 'Small/Medium/Large Icons' as my view preference. I appreciate there's 4.7Gb of stuff and eventually it does read, but I've never had a rewriter that appears so sluggish in this regard. Its specs say it reads at 16 speed. If I insert a DVD of MP3 files, by contrast, it handles these in a flash and many of these MP3 files are much larger than 'jpg' files! Re-writers in my previous less well-spec'd machines have never exhibited this 'problem' for me. I'm fairly new to Win7 and I wonder if it's linked to Win7 in some way? Anyone having the same thing happen with their Liteon or have some advice? Many thanks

Hello kwil :) please tell us that are you using any Anti-Virus? if yes which one? coz i had same problem few years back and it was due to the auto-protection feature used by the Anti-Virus which actually tries reading each image by image in row which takes a lot of time.

Hi boogieboy...many thanks for taking time to reply.
I've been using the excellent Avast anti-virus for ages...
Not sure if it has 'auto-protection' feature you mention...but you make a good point and the more I think of it, the more I think you may be right.
However, I'm not sure how to go about altering Avast accordingly.
    Any further thoughts?
    Many thanks

    Support Forum

    Good suggestion Boogie.

I would further suggest a trip to the Avast support forum to see if anyone else has had a similiar problem.

Thanks HammerHead :) also HammerHead gave a good suggestion to look out for a similar problem in their forum. Try the options in Avast and maybe there might some option for Optical Drives etc im not sure as i've never used it. You can also make yourself sure of this problem by uninstalling your anti-virus and then checking the disc with images that they load or not :) and let us know here. You can re-install later at anytime.

P.S. since i start using Microsoft Security Essentials i never had any trouble reading the media of any kind off the discs and no trouble with the system resources too :)

Hi fellas...again, thanks for your input and time. 1) I looked around my Avast interface and found a possible link: Open Avast Interface/Real-Time Shield/File System Shield/Expert Settings/'Scan When Attaching'/untick 'Scan Auto-run items when removable media attached/OK 2) I also thought that turning of Win7 'Indexing' might help: Start/type:'services.msc'/scroll to 'Windows Search'/Properties/select 'Disabled'/Apply 3) I also turned off 'Auto Play' This all seemed to improve matters - but not by much. By way of added comment: my 'jpg' files are set out in different folders. I'm accessing a folder at a time and like I said, it's a chore. Also, I meant to add I have TWO of the same Liteons in my tower and both behave the same way. I've tried using different branded media - same result. One other thing I've noticed since I did the above: even when I've exited the folder and indeed Windows Explorer, the light on the rewriter continues to blink as if the damn thing is STILL reading! Only by pressing the 'Eject' button, does this stop. This never happened before...grrrrr! I did wonder if all this had something to do with Windows 'swap-file' or whatever it's called, but with 8Gb memory that shouldn't have anything to do with it, should it? Since the Liteon handles all other functions with no problem, I have to conclude it's not the unit itself that's the culprit...again, I have two of them, both operating perfectly in all other respects. Any other suggestions? There has to be a simple answer to this... Regards

Hi Hammerhead... Thanks for the link, useful but doesn't really address this problem. Like I say, all other functions (including recognising/formatting CD/DVD etc) work perfectly on both Liteons, so I'm pretty sure the units are not defective in any way. I'm now at a complete loss....any other suggestions anyone? Regards

    Digress

You failed to mention in your earlier posts. Have you tried it with your anti virus turned off?

    Sinking

OK, I am grabbing at straws.
Open Device Manager. Scroll to "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers". Expand -- Tree should show ATA Channel #'s. Click each one to find The one your rom deck is on. Accomplish that by right click and check propeties and then advanced tab.
When the proper one is found. Make sure the "Enable DMA" box is checked. Also you can see from my snip that my deck is in Ultra DMA Mode 2.

    Attachment 194992

Note: If you are booting in to Raid Mode or IDE your Device Manager may look different. I don't have anything to compare to.
