Extra HDD not recognized in Windows or BIOS

A friend had a problem with his hdd and gave it to me to see if I could find out what is wrong with it.

I plugged it into my pc, but I cannot see it either in Windows or in the BIOS. I want to run a diagnostic of it to see what is wrong with it, but since I can't access it I can't do anything with it.

    Any help will be appreciated.

    Thanks

Be sure to check the cable connections, as I'm sure you have. When the computer starts can you hear or feel it spin up? If it is properly connected on both ends of the cable and won't spin up, there is little you can do.
