Why is everyone worried about partitions, etc. when the problem has to do with the BIOS? If the BIOS isn't seeing the drive during POST, then all that other stuff isn't relevant.

How old is this thing? Because this is intermittent, you ought to see if there are BIOS settings that are either corrupted or improperly set due to low battery voltage.

I suggest that before you go spinning your wheels too much more, you remove the 2032 battery and let the BIOS settings clear themselves. While you're waiting for that to happen, measure the voltage on the battery and replace it if it's under 3.00VDC. After you know that the battery is good, and the settings have completely cleared, then re-set everything in BIOS and try it again.

I'm not convinced it is 100% a BIOS problem.

If you can get hold of a Windows 7 DVD you can do this.
Clean Install : Factory COA Activation Key
If you don't have a DVD you can get an ISO file here that you can burn a DVD from.
Windows 7 ISO x86 and x64 Official Direct Download Links (Ultimate, Professional and Home Premium) « My Digital Life
If you know someone that will let you make a copy of theirs, even if it isn't the correct edition you can do this.
Windows 7 Universal Installation Disc - Create
And then make one of these.
USB Windows 7 Installation Key Drive - Create

That was exactly my problem. After 10 (or less?) years, the battery (in my Windows XP desktop computer) wore-out. After inserting the new CR2032 lithium disc battery and booting the computer, I simply had to press the F1 function key (as prompted by Windows) to confirm using the factory default BIOS settings (which automatically get re-set when you replace the battery). Pressing F2 and entering the BIOS set-up utility was unnecessary for me.
The only thing left was to re-set the date and time, though if the box (in Date and Time Properties, within the Internet Time tab) is checked that auto re-sets date/time and you're online, that takes care of itself.
