    External Harddrive "Volume is Dirty"

A couple days ago I downloaded an album (to my external harddrive) off a bands website, about halfway through the download it started stopping and telling me it couldn't download because the volume was dirty. I was able to continue the download but it would stop again after a few seconds. Since it was a torrent I was able to relocate the album to download to my main harddrive, and it worked. Although now, on my external harddrive I have a half - completed file, that I can't delete, and if I try to move it anywhere it says "Error 0x80071AC3: The operation could not be complete because the volume is dirty. Please run chkdsk and try again."

I went to command prompt and typed "chkdsk E:" it said --

    C:\Users\G>chkdsk E:
The type of the file system is exFAT.
The volume is in use by another process. Chkdsk
might report errors when no corruption is present.
    Volume Serial Number is 80EE-F804
Windows is verifying files and folders...
    Volume label is Seagate.
File and folder verification is complete.
Windows has checked the file system and found no problems.

wen i do chkdsk i get "Access denied as you do not have sufficient privilegs. You have to invoke utility running as elevated mode".

To run chkdsk in elevated/administrative mode:-

    1. Click Start Orb
    2. In search box, type cmd
    3. Right-click on cmd.exe, and choose 'Run as Administrator'
    4. Type in chkdsk /r and when asked to reboot, reboot your computer

    Hope that helps...

I had the same thing happen to me today. I have a 2GB external hard drive that has two partitions on it - a small one NTFS and the big one EXFAT.

Anyway, I bumped the USB cord during a big file transfer and subsequently got stuck in the loop of this "volume is dirty" nonsense. I ran chkdsk, chkdsk /r, ran it in administrator mode (even though my default account is admin) rebooted, ejected, switched USB ports, and still no luck whatsoever.

No errors were found on either partition in any of the dozen disk check routines. It was just the device was flagged as dirty somehow.

Finally, the solution... I unplugged the drive, took it to another laptop (also Windows 7) plugged it in, and was able to transfer a file without any problem. I then returned it to my original laptop and it worked fine.
