Hard Disk clicking

Hello there,

Recently my computer's hard drives started clicking....both of them =(. I wasn't able to copy off my files or boot up as it would constantly freeze. So in order to save my data i bought a sata to usb cable to connect to my laptop to copy off the data. When i connected it i was able to save all my data and the hard drive didn't freeze one bit...a friend of mine suggested that it wasn't the hard drive but in fact the power supply that was causing it. Could it really be that or is my HD really dying or is it something else?

Hello,

The easiest thing to do would be to take the Case of the PC and listen for the clicking. If its your hard disks then I suggest that you do a Chkdsk to look for faults on the drive.

To Run a Chkdsk, do the following:

1. Open the "Computer" window
2. Right-click on the drive in question
3. Select the "Tools" tab
4. In the Error-checking area, click <Check Now>.

Yes they both are that's why I backed up the data, i can't run the check disk because it won't boot up.

Ahh ok. Yes it does sound like a disk problem then.

Does it do anything at all if you turn it on?

Well I have 2 HD's. 1 contains my OS alone and the other contains my data..the important stuff. The 2nd HD has stop reading when i plug it into my laptop with the sata to usb cable while the 1st one which has my OS still reads. But if i try to boot it up it would freeze.

Run the chkdsk on the second drive when its plugged in via the SATA to USB adaptor.

If it truly is having problems then you may need to use some recovery software like R-Studio to recover the data if there is any that you have missed.

Ok will do, but can my power supply be causing the problem as well?

If you have plugged the disks into your PC via an adaptor and they are still not spinning or are making a noise then it will be the disks.

well it's spinning up just fine, so i'll run the disk check soon. I'll let you know the results

Just in case it doesn't work you can try hooking them up to another computer to see if they do the same. Seems a bit strange that both started acting up at once. If i were you i'd suspect a bad power supply that can't maintain the voltage when the disks try to draw a bit more power.
