Overheating

Hello, I have an overheating problem with my laptop. I use for a half hour and it overheats and shuts down. I have to have it hanging halfway off of a desk in order to use it for long periods of time. My fan is also pretty loud I've noticed. I don't know if its just a messed up laptop (which I can't return because Circuit City decided to close ) or if I could possibly update anything to help it.

Any ideas or advice on how to fix it?

If it's not within warranty, you could always take it apart and blow out any dust and debris from the fans and such. It's amazing what a small amount of dust inside of a small fan can do.

Your laptop has a problem. A cooling mat will not address the cause, it will only address the symptom.

At a minimum, blow out all of the vents and bays on the machine.

This model is reported to run hot. There are reports all over the web. Do not let the HP phone tech dissuade you. If your machine is shutting down, it has a problem that exceeds the scope of these reports.

Also, I am curious. Is the sound quality OK?

This is a problem with many 64 bit laptop and it seems the culprit is the 64 bit display drivers are not starting the fans until the system is already too hot.

Going back to 32 bit is known to fix this problem for now because the fans start up at a much lower temp. Eventually they will have the driver fan problem on 64 bit lap tops fixed.
