What's wrong with the idea that the video card is defective?

If the board works with the older video card then you know:

    • The PCI-e slot is good
    • The motherboard, CPU, RAM are good.

    That leaves you with:

    • Bad (newer) video card(s)
    • Bad power supply
    • Incorrect wiring

I would focus on those areas.

I just post the problem to the VIP motherboard forum at ASUS as well.

While I'm waiting for a possible solution maybe I'll just go ahead and build inside the case and install an OS since I can get a post. Then try one of the alternate methods of updating bios--provided latest not already there.

I am taking a break..this turned out to be longer than a weekend project but I'm relieved somewhat because I think nothings really broken. If something was really broken I believe the 2600 would not be detected. Anyway I welcome all ideas and as I try things over the enxt day or 3 or however long it tkaes, I'll update.

Yes maybe I did really ruin 2 video cards somehow because the 5770 that worked in the old system, then was undetected in the new system, no longer worked when I moved it back to the old system--of course I was still using the new PSU. BUT I dont want to fault the PSU as everything else so far has worked correctly---fans, lights, cpu all got power. Maybe I hooked the 2 newer cards up to the wrong PSU plug the first time around. I do remember switching some stuff. If that is the case though...really only the correct type connector ought to be able to fit into each space. But who knows... Now you got me thinking maybe I did ruin the cards----but why the fan spins on the 5770 then ?

I would not count on a BIOS update to solve this kind of problem. Getting a BIOS screen from a video card is one of the most basic of functions. A BIOS update is usually only relevant to correct advanced configuration problems - like recognizing new processors and power configurations.

Focus on the video card(s). There lies your answer.

I would get a volt meter and check the pci-e connections for proper voltage. It IS your psu... No doubt.

If the connectors are not seated properly, or have too much stress on them, you will not get power to the gpu. Also,.try using a molex to pcl-e adapter instead of the port/plug combo you are using.

    That leaves you with:

    • Bad (newer) video card(s)
    • Bad power supply
    • Incorrect wiring
Both both cards happened to be bad prior to installation? I don't know. But I do agree with either the PSU and/or the wiring. He said something about having troubles with the wiring of the cards, something about the 6 pin connectors, maybe somehow he fried the cards due to improper wiring (not sure how this would happen, though).

    But he then said:
the 5770 that worked in the old system, then was undetected in the new system, no longer worked when I moved it back to the old system--of course I was still using the new PSU.
This means one of two things, he friend the card due to improper wiring, or the PSU is to blame.

I read somewhere about a switch on that PSU that controls something (no, not the power switch), what does that do exactly? Or am I mixing up PSUs?

It has a switch allowing the fan to run only when needed.

Ok everything is moved back in the new case except I placed the 2600 XT card. I am successful post and just entered this BIOS--or what serves as it...new interface on these new boards. I see where 4 of the sata ports are being recognized and the other 4 (which are 2 each) on 2 separate controllers are not. So I guess those will need the mother board drivers. Can't remember if I should do that before OS install or after. I think after but then that means I am using the slower type sata port and I want to install to SSD. Well I guess I can switch the ssd over to the slower port temporarily... I'll check back in after I have all that sorted. Then I do see where the BIOS is the initial one and there has been 2 updates since.... I did read something that said one of these upgrades adds additional support for add on cards. hmmm.. I am hoping. I may not be back in touch until tomorrow but keep the advice coming because maybe I will have to check with a different PSU. I really hope not because all the cable management stuff is mainly done---again.

edit---ah never mind I see the SSD is listed in the boot menu so when I go to install 7 here momentarily it should allow me to install there I would assume. Forgive my ignorance bit it's been several+ years since I've done this last :)

the latest: installed drivers off the MB disk, off the AMD website and dl MSEssentials. Used Asus utility to upgrade BIOS. Upgrade was successful and I successfully restarted to Windows.

I turned off computer, switched the graphics card to the 5770 and no vga not detected message--hurrah= OR SO I THOUGHT---instead of proceeding into windows I got the something is not working possibly due a configuration or hardware change --- it proceeded to go right to startup repair is checking your system for problems. It has been that way 15 minutes with no progress. I hope I dont have to reinstall windows again----which made me manually phone in by the way--although was a simple activation.

ok just now another reboot now I am up on 2 screens on the 5770 ! It should be all 3 though---getting closer I think ! May pack it in for the night. work tomorrow.

SUCCESSSSSS--- now I afraid to turn the computer off haha. I am leery of leaving it on since it's a new build. So glorious HD picture on all 3 monitors. I just had to do one more reboot.

Upgrading BIOS solved the vga not detected problem with the newer cards.

I guess this can be marked solved. !! Tomorrow if it is still good to go I'll tidy up the cables, put the panels back on and finish hooking up my devices and install programs.
