possible corrupted hard drive, please advise!

hey, I lent an external hard drive to a friend for a few days, when I got it back, I plugged it in and a windows message popped up and said the file system is corrupted, would I like it repaired... I clicked yes and let it do its thing, but it only got to 99% and then froze.

All the files and folders on the drive seemed to be in order but when I copied a couple of videos over to my PC (mkv or avi) to watch them I found that they are slightly broken, with chunks of data missing throughout them so VLC will just through up rubbish or freeze the picture frequently throughout the video.

please let me know if there are any diagnostic or tools that I can run to find out the problem and possibly repair the files if possible. fingers crossed!

You could run a disk check on it - Disk Check

I had a similar experience once when someone accidently dropped my external drive from a height of one metre. Please check on this.

Taking it out of its enclosure and running it through SATA(?) would bypass a possible enclosure issue I'd say, if that's the case. . . don't know if it is, though.

Corrupted Hard drive? Ugh
So I just tried using a Windows 7 recovery disk to reset my computer back to factory settings like I have done numerous times before because I want to "clean" out the computer. I backed up all my personal files and went to reboot the computer using the CD/DVD drive. I initiated the Reset but half...

Hard Drive Advise
With another hard drive failure today, I'm again in the market for a new one. However, the fact that 3 out of the 4 Seagate 7200.11 drives that I bought in the last year have failed (and the outlook for the fourth doesn't look too rosy either), caused me to veer away from Seagate. I bought 3...

So my hard drive is always corrupted. Specifically, it's my "Videos" folder. It's still corrupted after Windown 7 runs the disk check at startup, as it insists it should.
