USB 3.0 B-Type The USB 3.0 B-Type connector is found on USB 3.0 devices. This connector is designed to carry data and power in USB SuperSpeed applications. Cables with this connector are not backwards compatible with USB 2.0 or USB 1.1 devices; however USB 3.0 devices with this connection type can accept previous USB 2.0 and 1.1 cabling.

Thanks for the USB website link Comp Cmndo; I'll definitely use that for future reference!

The WD uses a Micro B connection, not a B-Type, hence my comment in my previous post when I said that only a USB 3.0 cable could connect to the WD.

Well I tested the card in another desktop, and it works fine! So apparently it does not like my computer. All the drivers and connections on the two computers are the same, so I don't quite understand it. The only explanation I have is that, since the card fits in a PCIe x2 slot, and in my computer I was attempting to fit it in a x8 slot, the card might not have fit in there tightly, and was thus causing the instability and flighty connections.

What with slight variations between cases, cards and motherboards, I'm sometimes surprised any of it lines up right. One trick is to loosen the screws I've marked with red arrows and slide the mounting bracket one way or the other to see if you can get a better fit. :)

Thanks for the advice profdlp! I adjusted the screws and I felt the card snug in much more securely than before. I booted up the machine, held my breath, and lo and behold the card works! Thanks so much for this helpful tip!

I'm marking the thread as solved.
