Is there still an issue with using IDE/Pata devices?

I have a computer with all sata connections and have a brand new ide/pata HDD, I found laying around. I was going to get an adapter and install the HDD. I have read that people were having problems getting Windows 7 to recognize the device. I couldn't find a clear answer to anyone's problem with IDE drive being recognized. Is this still a problem?

As far as I have experienced this has been an old wives tale, I'm using an old PATA WD HDD as my primary with W7U on it and it works ok...aside from the un-nerving noise it makes.

    This might help.

Among my many home-builds and individual clients, there are eight pata drives working fine in sata ports with adapters.

You should not have a problem. BUT, there are caveats.

Buy the adapter only from Newegg or Amazon.
Make sure the adapter takes you from pata-to-sata.

Most of these adapters are NOT bi-directional; most of them take a sata drive to an IDE connection only (just the one way). Be careful.
