    Hard drive keeps shutting off

    Hello,

I had a WD Raptor that was my OS drive and when I would resume from sleep the computer would lock up and the only way to get it back would be to shut down, unplug it and then plug it back in. That was on my old rig. I upgraded (new mobo and SSD) and this drive became my programs drive. It was doing the same thing. I thought it was a faulty drive so I RMA'd it and got a new one. This new one is doing the same thing. I still use it for programs (my OS is a SSD) and now I resumed my computer from sleep and the drive was missing. I unplugged the drive power and plugged it back in and went into drive management and re scanned the drive and it appeared and the auto play popped up. It then disappeared again and I did the same thing again and now it's back on and it hasn't disappeared again. I have two other HDD and an SSD and they don't do that.

    Any ideas?

EDIT: I would like to add that once the computer is up and running and the drive is working, it doesn't disappear. It only happens after putting the computer to sleep for an extended period of time

So you tried shutting off the sleep feature for the hard disk using the Advanced Power Options? Although I'm not sure this can be done on a non system disk unless you are booting with it

You should also make sure the drive has an assigned drive letter in disk management.

You should also change the sata cable for the raptor, they can go bad sometimes. :)

It's not that the hard drive goes to sleep on its own. It's when I resume from a sleep that the hard drive does not come back on.

It does have an assigned letter.

I will try the sata cable but I don't think that's it.
