HDD nearly full, but the amount left keeps increasing?

I have been downloading loads lately and my hard drive is nearly full, and it has gone from being green to red. The thing is it was saying that there was only 4.7GB of space left and it stayed like that while I added about another 10GB of data. About 5GB of data later it is saying that I now have 14GB of disk space left. Is this just the OS finding more space by emptying memory dumps or is the OS deleting my files that I may want to keep to make space?

Have you done any manual cleaning? Have you run a program such as WinDirStat to get a better idea of what is going on with drive space?

Are you reading space available from Explorer or?

I can't recall Windows deleting much to make space if you have not directed it to do so--at least not gigabytes. Some programs do generate a lot of temp files.

I'd run WinDirStat or a similar program and maybe do a manual disk clean.
