Hi,
On my laptop I have a similar problem. At boot, my eSATA harddrive was recognized but not anymore after unplugging and then re-inserting it. I went into device manager and right-clicked ICH9 controller, then chose online driver update. It installed the update but still no luck. I went to Intel website, grabbed Matrix Storage Manager x64 and installed it, rebooted. After reboot, a dialog came up asking me to reboot once more to finish install, so I did. I started the app, saw all my drives listed by it after choosing advanced. Hot plugging seemed to work now. But when I shutdown or reboot, Windows hangs at the shutdown screen. I also have an USB harddrive which always hot plugs correctly. I've noticed the eSATA drive spinning down by itself after a while even though APCM is disabled, then after a while longer it spins up again, then down again and so on. I leave it unplugged all the time until I actually need it, because the unnecesary noise is so annoying. Help please.

I am not sure if the laptop SATA controller driver is available from the mfr or comes rolled into the mobo/laptop drivers or what... it was a desktop in my case... the mobo was from EVGA but I think I have to go straight to JMicron to get the drivers since they made the controller ON the mobo. Good luck.

Yes, thanks :) I've read that but I already wrote that I've downloaded and installed the Intel Matrix Storage Console package, which automatically gave me my latest driver along with the app itself. My laptop's mainboard has an Intel ICH9M/M-E Family 4 Port AHCI SATA Controller. I found this out when Windows 7 came up with an old version of the driver for it, after I right-clicked Windows' default driver (standard AHCI 1.0 serial ATA controller from Microsoft, year 2006) in device manager and then clicked the Update Driver button.
So hotswap is ok for me too now, apart from a strange bug: the 'Safely Remove Hardware' icon (in Windows 7 System Tray) often crashes EXPLORER.EXE as soon as I click on the icon. I have no clue why it does, or even why EXPLORER.EXE can't automatically restore itself the way it can on my Windows XP SP3. Anyway, I've set the icon to display notifications only, so that it doesn't easily get mouseclicked anymore by accident. After it causes the crash, Windows 7 hangs at User Logoff screen as soon as I try to reboot it (so that I need to hold down my laptop's main power button for 6 seconds in order to power it down before I can start it again). I've also tried HotSwap! 5.0.0.0, but it didn't fix the problem. As a workaround, I just pull out the cable without using the 'safety' and of course I always make sure that there's no app accessing the drive and that its activity LED is continuously lit before I pull.

Instead of starting a new thread I thought I'd ask in here since my question is related.
Just got my first external HD with esata. It's a 1TB WD Green in a Rosewill case. I am currently running Win7X64 in IDE mode so I am aware that my HD has to be on before I boot or reboot to gain access to it. Here are my questions:
1. First of all can I switch my configuration to AHCI without a reformat? I know you are supposed to be able to but I've tried the methods I have found online with no success (registry edit, etc), I still get a blue screen and have to go back to IDE to get back in.
2. I use the External for backup only, when I am done a backup for instance, is it safe to just switch off the external HD? ie, is there something else I should do first, there is no safely remove hardware option for example.
3. I noticed that while my computer is sleeping, if I switch on my external HD, then wake it up, I instantly have access to my external HD. Is this ok to do it this way vs rebooting entirely?

The fix you tried is for intel chipset boards I think, so when you try to boot it blue screens - you can check here for yourself - Error message when you start a Windows 7 or Windows Vista-based computer after you change the SATA mode of the boot drive: "STOP 0x0000007B INACCESSABLE_BOOT_DEVICE" . To be on the safe side turn off the pc and disconnect the drive, and when you want to reconnect it turn the pc off, and then connect the drive, and turn it on before starting the pc. What your doing sounds ok if your not getting an errors - simple solution is to leave it on - less wear and tear on the hard drive - you do more wear and tear turning a hard drive off and on then just leaving it on.
