It's possible that you received a defective drive. Seagate has a free hard drive diagnostic called SeaTools. There are two versions: SeaTools for Windows and SeaTools for DOS. I'd use the Windows version first. The DOS version requires burning an ISO image. Click the "Download" link on the SeaTools page.

I installed a Seagate 3tb HD about 3 weeks ago on a new mid-range tower. Barely can hear it running. Where did you buy it from? You might want to see about exchanging it.

i bought it from e-buyer. i have two of these installed in the same machine which are obviously quieter.

    WD 2TB 3.5" SATA-III 6GB/s Caviar Green Hard.. | Ebuyer.com.

maybe thats the problem... im comparing the two types.

Hello Jonesie, is it a constant clicking?

I had a problem with my external seagate expansion drive. It's a common problem with the external ones looking on the Seagate site. It's actually a Barracuda 7200.12 inside the case.

I took it out the case, installed it into my pc and updated the firmware, then put it back in the case. That was 18 months ago and it hasn't clicked once!

See if there is a firmware update for your drive. It's a long shot but you never know.

its not just a random loud click. its also the constant iritating 'disc spooling' noise even when the drive is idle. it has no data on it and is not accessed for anything that i know of. im comparing the noise to the samsung spinpoint f1 1tb and the WD green caviar 2tb noises. the seagate is ridiculous. has anybody else discovered this.

PS. i have updated the firmware.. no sollution.

Thank you for your time and patience.
