The Intel CPU cooler mounting mechanism can be a bit testy and frustrating, but if you mount the cooler outside of the case, you should be able to get it done.

You should be able to feel the mounts "click" as they lock into place. But DON'T rely only on that.

Be sure to actually look at the bottom of the motherboard where you will see the mounting pegs protruding through the holes. They should all protrude through the same amount. If you are not careful, it's easy to leave one corner not properly mounted.

It helps to be able to look up at the board from the bottom as you drop the cooler into the mounting holes to confirm that all the pegs are dropping through the holes. I used my motherboard box sitting on its edge as a platform and then just balanced the mobo on top of the board box so the mounting holes were overhanging the box edges. I was then able to actually see the pegs drop through the holes because I was looking up at the bottom of the motherboard.

If you were using the stock cooler, you could probably just press down, but still check by looking at the bottom of the motherboard when you are done.

You'll figure something out. How awkward it is depends on which cooler you have, but the mounting mechanism is pretty standard--using those 4 pegs based on the Intel specification.

The mounting pins should have arrows on top to indicate the proper rotation. The arrows indicate how to rotate them to REMOVE the cooler. They should be clockwise to mount it.

Ignatz has already responded, but just to be clear:

The CPU itself takes no force to install, although you may have to apply some pressure to the locking lever that holds it in place.

The Intel heatsink and fan are pressed in, I guess. (I haven't used an Intel stock heat sink in years.)
