Keyboard behaves differently in different programs

I have a Microsoft Wireless Comfort Keyboard 1.0a. The keys behave differently in different programs. For example, \ shows up as < while > shows up as . Any ideas? As you can imagine, it's most annoying - not to mention that I need \\ to work!

BTW, I have updated the driver.

    Thanks!

Are you sure your language settings are right? You can change these in your control panel under keyboard.

Thanks. You're right - the keyboard language settings jump from US to something else arbitrarily. Pressing ctrl-shift clears the problem.
