The reason why it wouldn't work would be it wasn't any problem with the controller card to start with. Once the mechanical part of a drive is history how old or new the controller card is won't make any difference.

If the drive simply stuffed up without a sound then you could suspect something let go on the controller as a possibility. In most cases the clicking sounds on any drive points at worn internal parts not servicable.

Plus you first have to be able match the exact same card either taken from another drive same size and speed for the card and follow the recommendations in the guide for this which do suggest a data recovery service by the way when you find out that it will take far more to fix a drive once things inside are giving out. In my experience it's more than that. You've got to find a card that was manufactured for the exact same manufacturing "run". If you just get a card for the same model (size/speed) it's likely not going to work. The cards for any given model change every so often. If you can find a card that was for a drive assembled at the same location and within a week or so of your drive you may be in luck.

If someone is really desperate and doesn't want to or can't spend the money, you can even do a one time opening for data recovery by replacing head stack, voice coils, etc. Short of disassembling platters/motor.

The fact that the drive was recognized and still found to have the data on it shows the present controller card isn't the problem. Otherwise the drive would be sitting there lifeless. That controls the motor telling it how fast to run or when to slow it down as well as the main arm the heads sit on as to where to go across the platters. While the clicking sound generally points at the arm slapping around inside.

When the arm goes that has the read/write heads on it the volume on the drive can't be mounted since nothing can read directly from the drive since the arm is flaky at best. But at least when installed internally on the other machine you have the best chance of saving files from it. If you look in the Disk Management there and find a 232-234gb volume shown you simply right click on that to select the change drive letter option and pick a letter available.

The transfer rate would be much faster for a drive on the way out as well when going to use a data recovery program or if needing trying out the live cd method to see just how much you can save from it. I would start with the most important first which would be anything you can't simply replace later.

As for the 80gb and initial crash it sounds like that was mainly due to not having cleaned off the drivers from the old card first before trying to install for the new card resulting in two set clashing with each other. The boot information likely got a little foobar from the hard boot or shutdown if it wasn't from a new bad sector formed on that drive.

I understand the discussion is 5 years approx.

I came with a question concerning the same exact HD, a Western Digital WD2500 Caviar SE. The head arm was loose and this answered half the prob. 2nd part. I prob should have started a new post and for that I am sorry will explain shortly. So secondly, I put this HD in 2 separate PC's and now both fans sound like a Cessna Skyhawk. I have taken out the battery. I have switched jumpers, unplugged from the surge protector and have tried everything I have been told and yet the planes ascend every time I hit the power button.3rd.I had to go back to my history to see what I came here for and that in no way is a bad thing. I signed up just because of the way U2 went back and forth so calmly which relieved all of my angst. It was like watching two Chess Masters head to head with their last few pieces on the board. Vey much enjoyed it so TY both.Back to the point, one PC was told I could change the CPU on without flashing and maybe the problem but very slight upgrade so the pinning may have affected it. I am learning PC repair for comfort and not monetary. I build houses for that and eyes are too bad to do models anymore. Sorry, I know I run on but TY for the help from 2000+ days and nights ago and any to get the CMOS or whatever it is straight would make me very happy. TY for your time each and all.
