    Scanner Problem

It may just be time to retire it, but until now my HP5510v has worked reasonably well. However now, even though it will preview a document as well as always, it will not scan it. It takes forever for it to finish a pass, with the light carriage moving extremely slow, and stopping ~ every 1/4 to 1/2 inch. Each time it stops, the light goes out for a couple of seconds, then it resumes it's snail-like journey.

Windows says that all is well with it, except in the error message after a failed attempt, in which it just says to check the manufacturer's manual, which is no help, because the printer's software will not install on W7 from the disk or download...Windows installs the driver itself.

I did go through the setup options, and the only thing I found that I thought might help is that I set it to the original defaults. At first I thought that the light carriage must be binding on something, but on the return it moves just as fast and smooth as ever.

Is there anything that I can do, except toss it in the dumpster and buy another?

EDIT: Weird! When I use the document tray, which it insists on when choosing the document scan option, it works just fine.

Do you have another PC you can try the scanner with and see if it has the same issue?

Yes, that is a good thought, but I'm not inclined to mess with it tonight. I'll try that tomorrow.

Hmm, the 5510v is listed in the Fax And Scan dialog as printer 5510v #2, even though there is only one instance of it, and it is set as default. I had Windows Update reinstall the driver for it, but that didn't help. I also attempted to delete another printer that I have installed in Printers And Devices...an HP 7200 PhotoSmart, but even though it disappears upon deletion, when I reopen Printers And Devices, it reappears.

I can't clearly remember, but I think that the printer settings in Fax And Scanner is different from what it was before I installed the PhotoSmart, and may be the cause of the problem. How do I really get rid of it to test this idea?

Did you have the HP 7200 disconnected when you uninstalled it?

    How about:
    Disconnect HP 7200, uninstall HP 7200, re-boot?
Is it still listed after re-boot?

Actually, it hasn't been connected for quite a while. I only connected it once to test it out when I bought it used from a neighbor. As far as the reboot goes...no joy, it reappeared just as before.

Maybe HP has an uninstall utility?

On some PC's i have multiple Hauppauge devices, and sometimes I use their "HWClear" uninstall utility to clear everything...and then re-install...

If there is an uninstaller, I'm not finding it. Apparently the 7200 is a network capable printer, but at least in the list that I found, the 5510v is not. I don't know that it has anything to do with it, but maybe? I would try using regedit to locate the driver, but I have a feeling that I wouldn't be able to tell the difference between the two printers in the registry.

I may have fixed it...not certain. At least I did get it to scan a couple of times normally. All that I did was switch to the fax printer as default, and then back to the 5510v. For the moment I shall consider the problem solved. Thanks for the help.

Cool, amazing how that "switch it on and off" often fixes things :)
I'll not post my last ideas...hopefully not needed
