Win 7 x64 Mouse disconnects, but mouse is OK

    Hi all,

I see LOTS of discussions in various forums about this recurring problem. Now I've got it. And it's a pain to troubleshoot. There appear to be several causes for this. But what worked for some folks has NOT worked for me, YET. I'd love it if we could find the root cause. I suspect Microsoft needs to put this issue to bed. Not that I'm sure it's the OS, yet. But it might be.

I had to replace my Logitech gaming mouse a year ago, and thought the replacement was a dud, but no, I have entered into a somewhat diabolical situation, that others are having, unfortunately for several reasons, it appears.

I'll post my System config at the bottom of the page. To make life easy.

WHAT's HAPPENING is the mouse disconnects. Its an optical, and the LIGHT STAYS ON. So, my OS, OR my hardware THINKS the mouse is disconnecting, when it is not. it happens very frequently. It seemed to start slow, and progress, hinting to hardware issues. I have tried the mouse itself on another machine, it's fine. I tried a DIFFERENT MOUSE, on the PS2 port, and IT DOES THE SAME THING. I get the windows "beeboop" of a disconnect, and mouse us frozen for a second or two, then it reconnects. When I open device manager, the screen refreshes every time I get the disconnect, as it will when you plug something in or unplug. Occasionally I see an exclamation point on one of my HID compliant devices. It is driving me berserk. Really awful trying to play Battlefield with a mouse that freezes all the time. Some people with this problem say it happens more when playing games, I dunno, it seemed that way at first. But now it happens so often in or out of games I don't think the games are relevant. I will say that looking at resource monitor, when the system is quiet..which is rare in Win 7..I can usually move the mouse around just fine. AS SOON AS MY PC starts doing ANY work, "beeboop...Beeboop" the mouse starts disconnecting. Is the kernel getting hung-up somewhere? If so, why can't I find anything in Event-Viewer??? sigh..

Now, I've done EXTENSIVE troubleshooting, and I've posted in other forums. I keep looking for a solution in various forums. Here's what Ive done so far:
    SOFTWARE:

If this issue is creating anything in Windows Event Logs, I'm damned if I can find it. I'm still searching through all the noise in that thing that is created by Windows operating normally. This OS does too much on its own, makes troubleshooting real hard. I'm pretty shocked/angry that this, a somewhat serious problem does NOT seem to be generating anything in the Events.

I replaced the mouse driver. I'm currently using the Windows driver.
I zapped the USB root HUB in safe-mode, and let the OS re-install it. NO help there.
I tried adjusting USB power settings, nothing helped.
The problem persists in SAFE MODE, BTW which pretty much rules out any nasty adware/spyware/malware.
I tried creating a new Widows User account. No HELP, still disconnects.
I wish I had a good restore point to try, but I don't. Shame on me.
This MIGHT rule out the OS as the problem, but I'm not sure. I booted from the Windows 7 Install disk, it uses the mouse. It STILL disconnects there, too. Now that disk DOES use some drivers from my hard drive, I'm trying to get Microsoft to tell me how much it uses.

This makes me think its hardware, although I can't rule out the OS, yet. I'd like to, I'm going to try to create a boot-disk with USB mouse drivers to if I can. Or, I'll install on another Ubuntu, and see if the problem persists. (that's quicker than re-installing the OS)

If I have to I'll re-install the OS, but I just did a few months ago when a hard drive crashed, so I'm not thrilled about doing that again just yet. Some other people with this issue think it came with a Windows update.

I saw someone suggest removing all the .net installs. I might give that a whirl.

Worth mentioning: When I tried to change the mouse driver, I installed the G400 gaming driver from Logitech, and man, did things get worse. While playing Battlefield 2 AIX mod, the sound would go berserk, video would get crazy, mouse disconnecting like crazy, then, BAM! Blue screen. It said it was trying to write to unavailable RAM. I checked my RAM, it was fine. So I rolled back the driver to the Windows mouse driver. I thought maybe IRQ conflicts, but I'd see something in Event viewer, or blue-screen no? sigh..

    HARDWARE:
As I said before, it's not the mouse itself. I tried both a PS2 mouse, and a USB, and the same problem keeps occurring.
I doubt its any overheating, I felt around the motherboard, and nothing seems to be cooking. I have been running with the case open and a fan blasting the insides of the PC, seems to make no difference. Voltages are steady in the BIOS monitor, so are temps.

I tried moving the mouse to front/rear and other USB ports, I figured that wouldn't work, because the PS2 port does the same thing.

I tried removing all other USB devices. No help.
I removed the one system card I had on the PCI bus. No help.

One possible problem is that I'm running the OS on an old ATA disk that has some bad sectors. The drive seems ok. I ran diagnostics and repairs, I doubt it is the cause. I know I'm slowing my system down a bit, as soon as I get a new SATA card, I'll be moving the OS to a new SATA drive.

I ran the Windows diagnostic on my RAM, it said its OK. Now, the Windows RAM test supposedly misses some stuff, so I'll find something that tests it better. Not thinking RAM is the problem.

This is maybe a clue, and it just started happening recently: On booting, the BIOS screen comes and goes as it should, then I get the black screen where it hits the boot-sector and loads the OS. It gets stuck there sometimes. All I see is that blinking cursor. I let it sit for a while, but its stuck. Usually, 1 or two reboots, and the OS loads OK. Now that COULD be a problem in the boot sector. I scanned it for viruses, none found. OS re-install would fix anything there. If there is some other way to check the boot sector for problems let me know.

I doubt my motherboard is dying, or has a bad component, but it's possible. I found no posts anywhere about problems like this on my type of motherboard, and I'd probably get blue-screens, or other problems if the motherboard were sick.

I'm going to flash my BIOS, but I just did a few months ago. I don't think it's my BIOS. I'll also replace the motherboard battery just to rule that out.

Whew! This is an enigma wrapped in a mystery...
I might have missed some other things I tried.

When I sit back I see that all I have really ruled out for sure is the mouse itself. But I most likely ruled out some other possible sources. My gut tells me it's the OS. But, then I say, no, hardware..grrr

SO, PLEASE give me a hand if you can. (and I don't mean clapping for my lovely post ;-P)
    Thanks

    I saw Pooch's tutorial:
USB Driver - General Fix for Problems

I followed it, successfully. But it didn't help. While doing it, I saw some other garbage hidden in my device manager to fix.
Such as that AODDriver. It's sitting there with an exclamation point...but from what I hear, that's common.

I am having this EXACT error as well. I've tried 2 different Logitech mice( maybe its a logitech problem?) One was a normal home/office mouse, the other was a G400 gaming mouse(with a replaced cord ._.).
I've never had this problem before this, my brother never had the problem with his logitech mouse, so i presume its not logitech. I have tried making it so windows cant disable it to save power, didn't work. and after a LOT of other attempts at stuff, still nothing. If anyone else had this problem and fixed it plz help. <3<3<3

This problem started happening after i upgraded to the G400 & my new Razer keyboard.

    Hi Lanix,

I did have the Logitech MX518. That's the one I needed replaced. Logitech sent me the G400 and it worked great for several months. I don't think this problem im having now is being caused by the mouse itself. I suppose the Logitech software might have something to do with it. What made me sure the mouse was broken with the MX518 was that the light would go out when I heard the Windows disconnect (loss of power). The problem I have now is only different because the light stays on. From what I hear there was a defective sensor in the MX518. But that's what I hear, who knows.

If you can, plug your mouse into a different computer, and see if it works. Mine does. The default drivers that Windows loads work fine for gaming. Yes, there are extra bells and whistles with the Logitech software. If I get my mouse working again, on my computer, I'll reload the G400 gaming software.

Logitech has been in the mouse game for a long time, so I doubt they are putting out crappy mice. With this economy who knows...hahaha

For a while I was thinking of just using both a PS2 mouse and keyboard because I'm having so many issues on the USBs.

Anyway, if your mouse works on another computer let us all know, there are other things we can try.

Im not sure if it means much, but I don't have the LGS installed ATM. And this happened with a regular old Logitech M100 as well. So I doubt it is the G400 in general.

EDIT: definantly not heating problem. I've been running about 35.9 C for 2 days now and problem is still occuring

    Hi Vexador,

Not to belittle all the hard work you've put in (because I did just about everything you did too), but have you tested the mouse on another computer? I did and didn't notice a problem so I figured it was probably a Windows update, but reading into others' problems regarding this mouse, I decided to start back at square 1: the mouse. I know you also tested a PS2 mouse, but it is possible it could be both mice with the same problem.

The cord connection on the top of the mouse is where there's often a short in the device. I plugged the mouse into another computer (to rule out other issues) and decided to roll the cord in a circle. Sure enough, every time I bent the cord to the left, disconnect. It was a small enough short that I hadn't noticed the problem when I was using it on my other machine simply because of the way the cord was hanging. So yeaaah, head back to the drawing board and test it out...if that's not it, well, I wish I could help point you in a better direction. If it is it, I'm sorry all the hard work has gone to waste, but at least an answer is better than none. Good luck!

    Hi Renira,

I did indeed go back to square 1. And, yes after all I did, it does appear to have been the mouse after all. My OS was also slightly messes up. But After I cleaned it up, I started troubleshooting over. I was misled by some things. The mouse did work fine for the short time I tried it on another computer. Perhaps it would have malfunctioned if I tried wiggling the cable. I still don't know why the PS2 mouse was not working when I tested it, but now it works OK. I borrowed a spare USB mouse from a friend, and it worked fine. I appear to be good to go now. That is 2 bad mice I got from Logitech in a row...I'm not very happy about that. They both only worked for about 3 months. I'm really upset that I suffered for about a month because I was sure the OS was demented...but it turns out I was...haha

    Enjoy.

I continue to have this problem with Logitech mice

I have done nearly everything any of you have done to try and find out what is disconnecting my mice. This has happened to me using the same mice, on two different computers, both running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit. The mice I have used are Logitech MX518, G400, G500. But I noticed with this brand new computer I am using now, the problem did not occur until I installed the setpoint software for the MX518. After that EVERYTHING stated by the lady in the first post began happening to me on this new ASUS computer. I uninstalled the software, but still on an occasional instance, the mouse driver uninstalls, or is disconnected, light going off, but EVERY time after a while while I am play Sims Medieval P&N the mouse disconnects, reconnects several times. Now, just 20 odd minutes ago, the mouse disconnects, but does not reconnect, and a new occurrence is now my keyboard disconnects with it, not reconnecting, so I am forced to plug in another mouse, so I can save my game, and reboot my computer in order to reconnect my keyboard. This just started happening with the keyboard.
I am at wits end. The reason I continue to try and find the problem with hopes it can be fixed is that I love the comfort of Logitech MX518, but that mouse has now been made obsolete, I guess. Logitech no longer is selling it. I bought two more recently from E-bay, supposedly brand new, but both of them did the same thing, my son had a couple of MX518 mice as well. Guess what? They also did the same thing when I tested them on my computers. And yes, I had the software installed. Microsoft's driver also uninstalls the driver, or the mouse disconnects with the MS driver in use, but not nearly as often.
My next step in trying to fix this issue is I am going to clean out my whole system of every trace of the Logictech software, and possibly drivers, as some may know that when uninstalling any software, traces, or registry items, logs, and other useless files get left behind, and Windows is notorious for associating SAME NAMED files, so if older files are inside my system relating to the errors made by my mouse, Windows is likely to replay, or react the exact errors again, so I especially intend to clean out the ROAMING folder inside of the APP DATA folder which is hidden by Windows default.
I am going to use a program called Your Uninstaller, first to remove most of the files from the software, and see what happens after. If I continue to have the same issues, I'll try a program called Mighty Uninstaller, as I have been told it does an awesome job. We'll see.
I will happily report back as soon as I find out if this attempt worked, or at least inform any and all who care, what the outcome will be.

Wish me luck, please, wish anyone with the problem luck, as I cannot find another mouse either locally, or on the internet that suits my comfort needs anywhere close to the MX518! LOL

    Xeny

PS. The other computer I tested the mice on was an Emachines, and is only 3 years old.

    G400 Mouse Hanging.

Mouse started hanging a couple of weeks ago while playing Guild wars 2, and also started to hang in normal operation. Thought it might be a dirt problem in the USB ports shorting out. So out with the hoover and gave the PC the once over. Going online it seems to be a global problem more so wth logitec and its drivers. Microsoft is aware of this problem and came up with a Hotfix, something to do with their server, unfortunately it did not work said it was incompatible with my PC. I have now replaced my logitec G400 cable mouse with an old Dell one that seems to be working ok at the moment. I uninstalled the logitec installation from the control panel. In the device manager it had two mouses shown. I uninstalled the one that had been disabled. If this does'nt work I will see if I can find one that uses the old plug in type and not the USB see if thats any better.

Have used this Dell mouse all day with no hang ups, come to conclusion that 64 bit windows 7 does not like Logitec mouse hard wired or wifi (tried both) whether it uses windows drivers or logitec's software.
