Win 7 x64 Mouse disconnects, but mouse is OK
Hi all,
I see LOTS of discussions in various forums about this recurring problem. Now I've got it. And it's a pain to troubleshoot. There appear to be several causes for this. But what worked for some folks has NOT worked for me, YET. I'd love it if we could find the root cause. I suspect Microsoft needs to put this issue to bed. Not that I'm sure it's the OS, yet. But it might be.
I had to replace my Logitech gaming mouse a year ago, and thought the replacement was a dud, but no, I have entered into a somewhat diabolical situation, that others are having, unfortunately for several reasons, it appears.
I'll post my System config at the bottom of the page. To make life easy.
WHAT's HAPPENING is the mouse disconnects. Its an optical, and the LIGHT STAYS ON. So, my OS, OR my hardware THINKS the mouse is disconnecting, when it is not. it happens very frequently. It seemed to start slow, and progress, hinting to hardware issues. I have tried the mouse itself on another machine, it's fine. I tried a DIFFERENT MOUSE, on the PS2 port, and IT DOES THE SAME THING. I get the windows "beeboop" of a disconnect, and mouse us frozen for a second or two, then it reconnects. When I open device manager, the screen refreshes every time I get the disconnect, as it will when you plug something in or unplug. Occasionally I see an exclamation point on one of my HID compliant devices. It is driving me berserk. Really awful trying to play Battlefield with a mouse that freezes all the time. Some people with this problem say it happens more when playing games, I dunno, it seemed that way at first. But now it happens so often in or out of games I don't think the games are relevant. I will say that looking at resource monitor, when the system is quiet..which is rare in Win 7..I can usually move the mouse around just fine. AS SOON AS MY PC starts doing ANY work, "beeboop...Beeboop" the mouse starts disconnecting. Is the kernel getting hung-up somewhere? If so, why can't I find anything in Event-Viewer??? sigh..
Now, I've done EXTENSIVE troubleshooting, and I've posted in other forums. I keep looking for a solution in various forums. Here's what Ive done so far:
SOFTWARE:
If this issue is creating anything in Windows Event Logs, I'm damned if I can find it. I'm still searching through all the noise in that thing that is created by Windows operating normally. This OS does too much on its own, makes troubleshooting real hard. I'm pretty shocked/angry that this, a somewhat serious problem does NOT seem to be generating anything in the Events.
I replaced the mouse driver. I'm currently using the Windows driver.
I zapped the USB root HUB in safe-mode, and let the OS re-install it. NO help there.
I tried adjusting USB power settings, nothing helped.
The problem persists in SAFE MODE, BTW which pretty much rules out any nasty adware/spyware/malware.
I tried creating a new Widows User account. No HELP, still disconnects.
I wish I had a good restore point to try, but I don't. Shame on me.
This MIGHT rule out the OS as the problem, but I'm not sure. I booted from the Windows 7 Install disk, it uses the mouse. It STILL disconnects there, too. Now that disk DOES use some drivers from my hard drive, I'm trying to get Microsoft to tell me how much it uses.
This makes me think its hardware, although I can't rule out the OS, yet. I'd like to, I'm going to try to create a boot-disk with USB mouse drivers to if I can. Or, I'll install on another Ubuntu, and see if the problem persists. (that's quicker than re-installing the OS)
If I have to I'll re-install the OS, but I just did a few months ago when a hard drive crashed, so I'm not thrilled about doing that again just yet. Some other people with this issue think it came with a Windows update.
I saw someone suggest removing all the .net installs. I might give that a whirl.
Worth mentioning: When I tried to change the mouse driver, I installed the G400 gaming driver from Logitech, and man, did things get worse. While playing Battlefield 2 AIX mod, the sound would go berserk, video would get crazy, mouse disconnecting like crazy, then, BAM! Blue screen. It said it was trying to write to unavailable RAM. I checked my RAM, it was fine. So I rolled back the driver to the Windows mouse driver. I thought maybe IRQ conflicts, but I'd see something in Event viewer, or blue-screen no? sigh..
HARDWARE:
As I said before, it's not the mouse itself. I tried both a PS2 mouse, and a USB, and the same problem keeps occurring.
I doubt its any overheating, I felt around the motherboard, and nothing seems to be cooking. I have been running with the case open and a fan blasting the insides of the PC, seems to make no difference. Voltages are steady in the BIOS monitor, so are temps.
I tried moving the mouse to front/rear and other USB ports, I figured that wouldn't work, because the PS2 port does the same thing.
I tried removing all other USB devices. No help.
I removed the one system card I had on the PCI bus. No help.
One possible problem is that I'm running the OS on an old ATA disk that has some bad sectors. The drive seems ok. I ran diagnostics and repairs, I doubt it is the cause. I know I'm slowing my system down a bit, as soon as I get a new SATA card, I'll be moving the OS to a new SATA drive.
I ran the Windows diagnostic on my RAM, it said its OK. Now, the Windows RAM test supposedly misses some stuff, so I'll find something that tests it better. Not thinking RAM is the problem.
This is maybe a clue, and it just started happening recently: On booting, the BIOS screen comes and goes as it should, then I get the black screen where it hits the boot-sector and loads the OS. It gets stuck there sometimes. All I see is that blinking cursor. I let it sit for a while, but its stuck. Usually, 1 or two reboots, and the OS loads OK. Now that COULD be a problem in the boot sector. I scanned it for viruses, none found. OS re-install would fix anything there. If there is some other way to check the boot sector for problems let me know.
I doubt my motherboard is dying, or has a bad component, but it's possible. I found no posts anywhere about problems like this on my type of motherboard, and I'd probably get blue-screens, or other problems if the motherboard were sick.
I'm going to flash my BIOS, but I just did a few months ago. I don't think it's my BIOS. I'll also replace the motherboard battery just to rule that out.
Whew! This is an enigma wrapped in a mystery...
I might have missed some other things I tried.
When I sit back I see that all I have really ruled out for sure is the mouse itself. But I most likely ruled out some other possible sources. My gut tells me it's the OS. But, then I say, no, hardware..grrr
SO, PLEASE give me a hand if you can. (and I don't mean clapping for my lovely post ;-P)
Thanks
